The Parent-Teen Connection Podcast is a space for parents who love their teen deeply but feel emotionally disconnected, shut out, exhausted, or stuck in constant tension. Hosted by Melissa, a school counselor, social worker, and parent-teen communication coach — this podcast goes beyond surface-level parenting advice and explores what’s really happening underneath teen behavior, emotional shutdown, attitude, conflict, and communication struggles. Through emotionally honest conversations, relational insight, and real-life parent-teen dynamics, listeners will gain a deeper understanding of how emotional safety, communication patterns, nervous system responses, and unresolved disconnection shape the relationship between parents and teens. This podcast is not about becoming a perfect parent. It’s about learning how to create a relationship where your teen feels emotionally safe enough to open up, communicate, and stay connected even during the hardest seasons. If you’ve ever felt like: “My teen won’t talk to me anymore.” “Every conversation turns into conflict.” “I feel like I’m losing my relationship with my child.” this podcast was created for you. Because sometimes the issue isn’t that parents and teens don’t love each other. It’s that somewhere along the way, they stopped feeling emotionally connected to each other. And healing that connection changes everything. 人間関係 子育て 社会科学

  • Your Teen Isn’t Lazy…They May Be Overwhelmed (And You Might Be Missing the Signs)
    2026/08/29

Your teen has homework to finish, chores to do, responsibilities piling up yet somehow they’re still lying in bed or scrolling on their phone. It’s easy to look at that behavior and think:
    They’re lazy.
    They don’t care.
    They have no motivation.
But what if what looks like laziness from the outside is actually something very different happening underneath?
In Episode 9 of The Parent-Teen Connection Podcast, we're unpacking why some teens procrastinate, avoid responsibilities, or struggle to get started and why labeling that behavior as “lazy” may cause parents to miss what’s actually getting in the way.
We’ll talk about the difference between unwillingness and overwhelm, why some teens avoid things they actually care deeply about, how repeated labels can become part of a teen's identity, and why understanding the reason behind a behavior does not mean removing accountability.
You'll also learn how to make an important parenting shift:
from “Why won't my teen do it?” to “What's making it difficult for them to do it?”
Because your teen may need structure.
    They may need accountability.
They may need support breaking something down.
They may need to experience the natural consequence of not following through.
And yes sometimes they may simply not want to do it.
The goal isn't to excuse the behavior. It's to understand it well enough to respond to what is actually happening.
If you've ever found yourself constantly reminding, nagging, lecturing, or wondering why you seem to care more about your teen's responsibilities than they do, this episode is for you.

  • Your Teen Isn't Giving You a Hard Time About School...They May Be Having a Hard Time Going Back #8
    2026/08/01
Back to school isn't just about new schedules, earlier mornings, supplies and homework. For many teenagers, it's also an emotional transition. They're returning to academic pressure, social dynamics, expectations, friendships, deadlines and sometimes situations they struggled with the year before. But teens don't always say: “I'm nervous about going back.” Sometimes it sounds more like: “I don't care.” “School is stupid.” “Leave me alone.” “Why do you keep asking me about it?” And when parents experience that resistance, it's easy to think: Why is my teen giving me such a hard time? In this episode, we're exploring another possibility: Maybe they're having a hard time. We're unpacking why the back-to-school transition can bring out irritability, avoidance, shutdown and attitude How parents can unintentionally add pressure before the year even begins, and why your teen's resistance may be communicating more than you realize. If back-to-school already has your home feeling tense or you want to start this school year differently, this episode is for you.
