概要

It was the summer of 2009, and I was babysitting for the first time in a town so small it didn't even have its own gas station. The house sat at the end of Old Mill Road, a gravel lane that dead-ended into a tangle of oak and poison ivy. The parents were going to a wedding, the kid was asleep by eight, and I was alone with a landline that didn't ring and a copy of 'The Shining' I'd found in the guest room. Around midnight, the phone did ring. It wasn't a wrong number. It was a voice that knew my name, knew where I was, knew what I was wearing. It told me to look out the kitchen window toward the old mill. What I saw there made me understand that some roads shouldn't be traveled, and some calls shouldn't be answered. This is what happened that night, and why I still check the locks at two in the morning.
