概要

 In the summer of 2007, on a two-lane blacktop outside the dying town of Bitter Springs, New Mexico, Luna stopped at a roadside shrine that should have been abandoned. It wasn't. Someone was maintaining it—laying fresh flowers, leaving cups of water, arranging small stones in patterns she couldn't read. The town's last living resident, an old man named Elias, told her the story of Thomas Vierra, a boy who went missing in 1973 and whose shoes kept appearing at the shrine for years after. But Elias wasn't the one leaving the offerings. And the shoes had started showing up again, three days before she arrived. What Luna found waiting at the shrine that night was not a ghost. It was something still unfinished, still waiting, still watching the road for a ride that never came.
