EP 37: Keepin’ it Reel-Turn Down the Funk[y] Old Tapes
In Ep 37 The Nitty Gritty is talking about old tapes–the thoughts, behaviors, or patterns from our past that taunt our mind and captivate our emotions.
Examples of what old tapes may sound like:
-blaming self or someone else instead of asking God, “what are you wanting to show me?”
-confusion, “I thought I was past this?”
-projection- the past replayed in our memory producing shame and reopening wounds
-works-based freedom- “What did I fail to do?”
- “I’m responsible for my future.”
- Defining freedom by feelings. Hearing “You’re not free”
- “I’m alone.”
- “I’m too free in my freedom.” Using Galatians 5:13-14 to condemn after repentance and releasing it to God.
In this episode you will:
-Distinguish building altars of remembrance–sacrifice to God, remembering who He is and what He’s done–from setting up altars of death, grieving what’s dead
-Discover the importance of recalling God’s faithfulness
-Answer questions such as:
- How do I remember the past without dwelling on the grieving thoughts?
- How do I turn grief into praise?
- How do I praise in the grieving?
- Is it normal to mourn the loss of our old self?
-Learn tips to recall God’s faithfulness in the desert moments and negative thought cycles.
-Discover how God’s light shines on the desert places, His beauty shines through.
-Replace the old tape with a new one filled with the promises of God.
-Turn down the volume on the funky old tapes and turn up the volume on God’s voice.
-Give others the grace to screw up and celebrate what they are doing well
-Speak out, “I’m not partnering with the lie. Thank you Jesus for the reminder that I am free.”
-Define yourself by God’s grace rather than the pain of our past.
Tips to recall God’s faithfulness:
Repetitive info and different deliveries of the information transfers information from our short-term to long-term memory storage.
Read God’s word
Write it down
Put it on the wall
Speak/Recite it outloud
Talk to someone about it
Engage your senses: create a song, make a dance/hand motions
