概要

 In the autumn of 2018, I spent three weeks working the overnight desk at the Hargrove Motel off Route 9 in Fenton, Pennsylvania. It was a dead-end job for a dead-end season—but on the third night, a woman in a gray coat checked in without luggage. She asked for room 112, which hadn't been occupied in years. The motel's ancient key rack still held a tag for it, dusty and brittle. She paid with bills that felt damp. What I saw through the peephole at 3:17 a.m. made me leave the job without collecting my last paycheck. This is what happened, and why I still don't drive past Fenton after dark.
