  • R.J. Kizer Tribute: Death Ring (1992)
    2026/08/29

We were saddened to discover that R.J. Kizer, a longtime editor and director for New World Pictures, passed away earlier this month. We were fortunate to be able to speak with R.J. several times about his incredible and long career, starting with editing 1979's UP FROM THE DEPTHS, 1980's BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, and 1981's GALAXY OF TERROR before moving on to directing the English-language sections of GODZILLA 1985 and co-directing 1988's HELL COMES TO FROGTOWN. R.J. transitioned to sound editing, working on movies like FIRE BIRDS and ARACHNAPHOBIA before getting a chance to finally direct his own feature, 1992's DEATH RING.

The film, a take on THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME, brings huge starpower, well familial starpower, in Mike Norris (son of Chuck), Chad McQueen (son of Steve), and Don Swayze (brother of Patrick), who star as a trio fighting for their lives in a hunt designed by wealthy manhunt organizer played by Billy Drago. R.J. may not have believed us when we told him, but we really enjoyed the movie, as you'll hear in the episode, which is our tribute to R.J.'s memory.

For one, the film took Marc and Ryan back to their San Diego roots, where the infamous Survival of the Fittest competition takes place, a contest Mike Norris easily wins only to become Drago's number one target. As we discuss, we will challenge you on your knowledge of 1980's local San Diego newscasters, the power of Sun-In, and the exact time it takes for chloroform to work its magic. Plus, snake blood!

Thank you to R.J. for an amazing career, we were honored to have met you and been able to discuss so much of your New World history. We'll never forget your incredible stories, sense of humor, and spot-on impression of Roger Corman. It was a singular pleasure to have interviewed you!

R.J. wrote a book! It's all about ADR recording, and there's truly no one better you could learn from, so you should definitely buy it! Go here.

  • Interview with New World executive Paul Almond (BEYOND THERAPY)
    2026/08/14

We continue #HAHAugest 3: Rule of Threes with former New World Pictures vice president and head of business and legal affairs, Paul Almond! Paul began his long career working for Roger Corman's lawyer Barbara Boyle and then the studio itself where he helped negotiate the deal for Corman's infamous Lumberyard Studio in Venice, California, where New World films like BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS and GALAXY OF TERROR were filmed! Paul's long history with the company leads us to talk about a wide variety of films, including CRIMES AND WHISPERS, THE PRIZE FIGHTER, HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP, and PIRANHA! When Corman sold New World to new ownership, Paul stayed on at New World where he was able to enjoy the success of ANGEL, meet Grace Jones during VAMP, and be the executive in charge in Paris while Robert Altman directed BEYOND THERAPY!

You won't want to miss this wide-ranging conversation about New World history, the people, and the films! We also discuss Paul's move away from New World, where he was head of acquisitions for ITC Entertainment before moving on to run production for Live Entertainment, where Paul relays his highs and lows of working for that company. • Ep. 179: Beyond Therapy featuring Dirk Marshall
    2026/08/07

It's #HAHAugust III y'all. A time for us to kick up our heels and have a good laugh. We couldn't think of a better way to kick off a month of belly laughs than with 1987's BEYOND THERAPY. Even the name of the movie (and stage play) is funny. It's full of super funny actors too including Julie Hagerty (AIRPLANE!), Jeff Goldblum (TRANSYLVANIA 6-500), and Christopher Guest (WAITING FOR GUFFMAN). It's directed by Robert Altman (NASHVILLE) who showed us Heuy Lewis's dong in SHORT CUTS. NOTE: we talked about this for a second in the episode, but it was cut for time. Sorry.

BEYOND THERAPY is about unbelievable people looking for love with the help of their equally unbelievable therapists in an unbelievable New York setting because the movie was actually shot in Paris. Anyway, it's a stage play that became a movie that everyone on the set thought would be amazing, but, pieced together as a whole, failed to live up to expectations. It's like a Reuben sandwich where corned beef is replaced with bologna. If that doesn't make sense, listen to the episode for additional explanations.

Joining us is returning guest Dirk Marshall from the VH US podcast (https://www.vh-us.com/), who gave BEYOND THERAPY five stars on Letterboxd. We went into this episode looking for a proper explanation. Dirk counter attacked us with a charming and surprisingly entertaining SHREK impression.

We know this episode is a bit on the lengthy side but trust us, it's worth it. Besides talking about the film, BEYOND THERAPY and its stage counterpart, we learn that both Dirk and Ryan have performed scenes from the stage play. Marc and Erica, discuss their upcoming 2 person Zoom rendition of BEYOND THERAPY that will be performed exclusively for job interviews. We talk about Reuben sandwiches and the much-beloved REUBEN REUBEN. Dirk shares his deep admiration for DESIGNING WOMEN And, we highlight an upcoming episode for the GrammerCast.

To close out #SciFiJuly: An Infinity of Titles, we going all-out by bringing back editor/director R.J. Kizer, who edited a variety of films for New World Pictures, to talk to us about GALAXY OF TERROR! R.J. was one of film's editors and worked on the most infamous scene in the entire film (hint: there's a worm)! We go truly behind the scenes, as R.J. describes the working conditions for editors on Roger Corman's infamous Lumberyard Studio, and what it was like to edit for Roger Corman and GALAXY OF TERROR director Bruce Clark!

Do we discuss the Infinity of Titles? Of course we do! Do we discuss how R.J. got the film a "R" rating from a "X?" Oh, we do! Plus, R.J. explains how he appeased the request for a "love scene," and, oh yeah, drops a few details about BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS and SPACE RAIDERS! R.J. is full of great stories, as you would know if you heard our episode about GODZILLA 1985 and/or his New World Career! Don't miss out on this conversation with a New World legend!

    2026/07/17

We continue #SciFiJuly: An Infinity of Titles with a giant interview with director and visual effects supervisor Ernest Farino! From an early age, Ernest was fascinated by special effects and his love for filmmaking would take him from creating the stop-motion creature in 1978's THE ALIEN FACTOR to Los Angeles and working for Roger Corman at the Venice Lumberyard studio on films like GALAXY OF TERROR and beyond! There, he would meet James Cameron and would work on films like THE TERMINATOR and THE ABYSS! We walk through Ernest's career, which included working on John Carpenter's ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK and THE THING as well as doing effects and main title sequences for a variety of New World Pictures films from the Corman era to the next ownership group!

We discuss the difficulty of bats in SATURDAY THE 14TH and Sybil Danning's costume in the TV edit of BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, the tricky ending of DEATHSTALKER, having lots of time and no time to work on the title sequences for GODZILLA 1985 and PRETTY SMART, and how Ernest's work on TAG: THE ASSASSINATION GAME may have played a key role in casting for THE TERMINATOR! Also, Ernest explains how he dealt with Arnold Schwarzenegger's biggest, erm, muscle, and how he was able to get away with saying "no" to James Cameron!

Ernest provided us with tons of stories, including about his directorial feature debut, STEEL AND LACE, which NWPPVIPs know is a film we love!
