  • Ep. 172: X-Men: Pryde of the X-Men featuring Peter Fluet
    2026/05/06

It's that time of year again, the time Marc dreads: Marc's Miserable Marvelous May, where we torture the non-superhero loving Marc with all the Marvel content produced while New World Pictures owned Marvel! In previous years we discussed The Incredible Hulk, the Punisher, even Power Pack, but now it's time to discuss the misfits of Marvel, The X-Men for our 4th installment of making Marc's life a superpowered living hell!

In order to properly discuss this merry band of mutants, we brought back one of our most powerful previous guests, the hilarious writer and performer Peter Fluet! You may remember home from Episode 33: STAR CRYSTAL! Peter brings his deep Marvel knowledge to the pod to help us make Marc Miserable.

This original pilot with 1989's PRYDE OF THE X-MEN was a pilot that didn't quite kickstart the X-Men Animated Series, but was certainly a precursor, though this version of the X-Men is slightly more... Australian than it needed to be. And also maybe a little pervy. Join us as we discuss the amazing theme song, the nostalgic animation, the wild collection of characters and their vocal choices. Don't worry Marc is still miserable, and we'll spend the month making sure he stays that way!

  • Nearly New World: Carnosaur featuring author Joseph R. Palinkas
    2026/05/01

We continue to celebrate #100YearsofCorman by pushing the boundaries of our "Nearly New World" sub-series to 1993, when Roger Corman decided to beat JURASSIC PARK at its own game and made his own dinosaur movie, CARNOSAUR! Joining us for this episode is author Joseph R. Palinkas, the writer of the new book, History of Carnosaur, which delves into the entire CARNOSAUR franchise of films, which also includes DINOSAUR ISLAND and Jim Wynorski's RAPTOR.

First, we discuss how Joseph discovered the CARNOSAUR franchise and his decision to write the book, the difficulties of writing a book about the CARNOSAUR movies, and then we dive into the first movie, writer/director Adam Simon's original CARNOSAUR, starring Diane Ladd, Raphael Sbarge, Jennifer Runyon, and Harrison Page! We talk chicken eggs, shelf-stable pie, and why it's important for a company not to leave the mad doctor they've just hired alone and with no oversight. Plus, Bobcats, hippies, and the scenes that didn't make the theatrical cut!

Don't miss this dive into CARNOSAUR with someone who literally wrote the book on the subject! Then, go buy Joseph's book!

  • 6th Annual Roger Corman Birthday Celebration featuring Kier-La Janisse
    2026/04/01

Now in it's sixth year, we celebrate Roger Corman's birthday by watching films from his directing history, and this year, we brought in a special guest: filmmaker and author Kier-La Janisse! Kier-La is a badass! Not just because she wrote the book House of Psychotic Women: An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films, or because she directed and produced the documentary WOODLANDS DARK AND DAYS BEWITCHED: A HISTORY OF FOLF HORROR, or even her work for Severin as an editor and producer of special features, but because she joined us from her home in Canada where a windstorm had knocked out her power! Armed with her cellphone and a lantern, she discussed her Roger Corman film selection and discussed her new book, Cockfight: A Fable of Failure, which examines the 1974 Monte Hellman film COCKFIGHTER released by New World Pictures!

They discuss why Kier-La decided to write a book about COCKFIGHTER, why Monte Hellman didn't want her to write one, and the difficulty of getting Ed Begley, Jr. to do an interview! All that plus much, much more, including Roger Corman movie picks from Marc, Erica, and Ryan! What did they choose? You'll have to listen to find out! Happy birthday, Roger!

Order Kier-La's book here: https://spectacularoptical.com/product-category/publications/. Or here: https://www.fabpress.com/.

  • Ep. 170: Dangerous Affection
    2026/03/26

To close out #MarchMadness 2: Let's Get Nuts, we had to go to the Light - Judith Light - with this made-for-TV movie co-starring an incredible cast of TV stars: Rhea Perlman (Cheers) and Jimmy Smits (L.A. Law)! Yes, we lost our minds watching DANGEROUS AFFECTION aka STAMP OF A KILER (as New World would release it on VHS), a New World Television production that stars Light as a pregnant children's book author (and illustrator, apparently) whose son happens upon a stamp that has secret plans imposed on it though the magic of 1980s computer technology! This makes her the target of a killer played by Michael Parks (FROM DUSK TILL DAWN) who may be lethal but his planning is not!

In this episode we talk about the dangers of friendship's affection, the importance of blending in, and a brand-new culinary creation that is sweeping the Seattle food scene! Oh, hey, about that last part, we should warn you, even though we are talking about a TV movie, don't listen to this episode with your kids!

(Also, do you usually listen to this podcast with your kids? How does that work? Let us know, will you?)

  • Ep. 169: Crazy Mama
    2026/03/20

We continue the madness of #MarchMadness 2: Let's Get Nuts! with a movie that pretty much everyone involved in the making didn't like. We're talking about 1975's CRAZY MAMA - a sort of sequel to BIG BAD MAMA and BLOODY MAMA. According to that argument, any movie with MAMA in it is also a sequel.

CRAZY MAMA stars Academy Award winner, Cloris Leachman and two people from HAPPY DAYS - Donny Most (Ralph Malph) and Linda Purl (Gloria in the earlier episodes and Ashley in the later years). Dick Miller also has a role which is worth noting because he makes everything good.

Originally titled, CRAZY MAMAS, the movie revolves around a family of women who after losing their hair salon decide to take a road trip to Arkansas where they plan to reclaim their family farm. How about that for a plot summary. We're looking at you, Letterboxd.

CRAZY MAMA is part road trip movie, part action movie, part comedy movie. We try to dissect what this movie wants to be. Marc provides instructions on what NOT to do when playing at a craps table. Erica shows off how cute she is in the most unusual way. Both Ryan and Marc pick the shortest, most obscure scene as their favorites and Erica shares that while growing up in the Midwest, she thought everyone in LA wore Drug Rugs or "Bajas" for some of you.

Our studio audience makes a big appearance on this one and we want to thank them for their support and generosity.

Also, we don't have a studio audience.
