  • Ep. 167: Seven Blows of the Dragon
    2026/02/27

We are saying goodbye to Foreign Film February (or #FFF for the insiders) with a bang (or is it a clang?) with 1972's SEVEN BLOWS OF THE DRAGON and 1972's THE WATER MARGIN. Is this episode the podcast equivalent of a double feature? Not really. You see, some of us watched SEVEN BLOWS OF THE DRAGON and one of us watched THE WATER MARGIN. And while SEVEN BLOWS OF THE DRAGON and THE WATER MARGIN are essentially the same thing except one of them is 35 minutes shorter... and makes even less sense.

Joining us is returning guest Dirk Marshall from the VH US podcast (https://www.vh-us.com/), who we normally bring in for his expertise in Canadian films, and figured he would do the same for a movie made in China. We do our best to piece together a considerably complex plot for a movie that should be more fighting and less talking, which is exactly what Roger Corman wanted.

In addition to unraveling the plot, Erica delivers blows to the team for incorrect statements and general bossiness. Dirk correctly points out that the nicknames applied to characters in SEVEN BLOWS OF THE DRAGON do little to trigger memory retention for the 100 characters in this movie. He also identifies good nicknames during the episode. Ryan tries his best to get the tracking right for his audio clips. Erica talks about a totally unrelated movie. Guess this episode is a double feature after all.

  • Ep. 166: Amarcord featuring Ali Davis
    2026/02/20

We continue Foreign Film February, or “FFF” with the King of T&A himself, Federico Fellini! Based on his childhood in Remini, Italy, AMARCORD is a weird blend of memories, characters, and farts! Is it a classy teen film? A condemnation of fascism? A variety of shots of boobs and butts? It's all three and so much more!

Joining us is comedian and writer Ali Davis, who has really had to suffer through some of the, should we say, quirkier selections from New World's past, but we thought we would have her join us for some arthouse cinema. Does it pay off? You'll have to listen to find out!

We discuss this wild film filled (and filled and filled) with characters and discuss Italian food, growing up in a small town, and the worst way a seaside village could torture it's local blind man. Enjoy as we discuss this slice of classic film, an Academy Award winner that Roger Corman was always proud to have distributed!

  • Ep. 165: Subway to the Stars
    2026/02/13

We are kicking off another Foreign Film February, or "FFF", which has become a colloquialism at Haus der New World Pictures Podcast. Is that not the case in your home? If it isn't, it's time to start. To kick off the 2026 #FFF, we are talking about 1987's SUBWAY TO THE STARS, a Brazilian drama that, if you looked at the poster, is nowhere close to what you would expect.

SUBWAY TO THE STARS explores a talented saxophonist (Vini) who's girlfriend (Nicinha) disappears after they have sex in an automobile junk yard. It should be pointed out, they didn't have sex in one of the cars in the junk yard. They do the nasty on the dirty ground full of oil, antifreeze, and transmission fluid. Given that, it should come as no surprise that Vini goes on a vision quest to find his missing girlfriend. Unfortunately, because he's a young, attractive musician, he does a pretty shit job of looking for her. Instead, he finds a menagerie of people to do the searching for him. Does he find her? If he does, does she stay with him? We don't cover this part in the episode, but that's part of our charm

In addition to talking about SUBWAY TO THE STARS, we revisit our pre-production of Steamin' (the remake of 1985's Steaming) and whether it could be considered for Cannes. We wonder whether Ska is ready to make a musical comeback. Erica champions the need for more horns (saxophones in particular) in movies and music. Marc makes a claim that there is too much saxophone in George Michael's Careless Whispers. Ryan talks about a great time at a Thom Yorke concert. We also talk about SUBWAY TO THE STARS.

  • Corman Graduates: Jack Hill Part 6: Sorceress Commentary
    2026/02/06

We conclude our first Corman Graduates series with our final episode about Jack Hill and his final directorial effort, 1982's SORCERESS! A strange end to his directorial career, Jack's disappointment with the end product left him to take his name off the film and leave the film business altogether. Hill would also never work with Roger Corman again.

But is the movie that bad? a success for New World Pictures, this CONAN THE BARBARIAN riff is a podcast favorite around here, so we dig into the film's history and troubled production, not to mention why Pando was included in the hero group, how hats can completely hide your gender, and why it's important to have a clean rug!

So find SORCERESS, and press play on the movie and this episode simultaneously to sync this up, as we dive in right away in this episode! Enjoy the history as we enjoy the final film of Jack Hill!

  • Ep. 164: The Boys Next Door featuring Ryan Verrill
    2026/01/30

We're knee deep into #FANuary where you have picked the movies we watch and this week we take a turn towards the serious. Seriously hunky guys, we mean. Actually, one seriously hunky guy that is NOT afraid to take his shirt off wherever and whenever he likes. We're talking about Maxwell Caulfield and also the 1985's THE BOYS NEXT DOOR which also stars some guy named Charlie Sheen who was never in anything else.

THE BOYS NEXT DOOR follows Roy (Maxwell Caulfield) and Bo (Charlie Sheen) who travel from someplace 6 hours away from Hollywood for a weekend of parties and murder. There's a lot more murder than parties. In fact, the only party they attend is at in their home town. Regardless, Roy and Bo find that life in Hollywood is hard. You have to pay before you pump gas, you have to be 21 to order alcohol at a bar and taking up two spots with your car is practically is not seen kindly by the locals.

For this episode, we're joined by Ryan Verrill, host of The Disc Connected podcast and the Executive Director of Someone’s Favorite Productions Podcast Network. In addition to discussing the movie, Ryan is also giving us our annual reviews. He will be sending out a peer review survey to all of our listeners, and we really, really hope you'll put in a good word for us. Please and thank you.

In addition to receiving our reviews, we discuss what makes a good party, 1980's gas prices and the unjust response to Grease 2. This episode has everything.

  • Ep. 163: Avenging Angel
    2026/01/24

It's that time of year! #FANuary! Where we don't pick the movie, the listeners do! For our second iteration of #FANuary, we have a great one for you: 1985's AVENGNING ANGEL, the sequel to 1984's ANGEL, one of the biggest hits of the second New World regime.

But while director Robert Vincent O'Neil returns, not everyone does, which is why Betsy Russell (OUT OF CONTROL) takes over in the titular role as the high school student by day and hooker by night. Only this time, Angel is just a student, a law student! But when she loses someone close to her, she has to hits the streets again as Angel. Or does she? We'll talk through the decision and whether it was necessary.

This is only our second ANGEL movie, following ANGEL III: THE FINAL CHAPTER, because we are going in reverse order in this franchise. But do we all remember ANGEL III? Regardless, it was hard to remember Susan Tyrell and Rory Calhoun, returning ro their roles from the first ANGEL, but who were sadly missing from the third.

We also discuss the legal weapons Angel claims are at her disposal, the ineptitude of the Gerrard family and the movie's shifting tone, and the film's wild ending in the Bradbury Building. And yes, we'll discuss the baby. Don't miss out as we venture futher into the ANGEL franchise!

  • Ep. 162: The Warrior and the Sorceress
    2025/12/19
We end #deathcember with THE WARRIOR AND THE SORCERESS which could be considered DEATHSTALKER-ish. Or DEATHSTALKER-light. THE WARRIOR AND THE SORCERESS stars David Carradine (DEATHSPORT, DEATH RACE 2000), Maria Socas (DEATHSTALKER 2) and Anthony De Longis (THE SWORD AND THE SORCERER) in a movie that pays off on its poster as it actually features a woman with four boobies.

Based on and entirely ripping off Yojimbo, THE WARRIOR AND THE SORCERESS follows Kain (Carradine), a mercenary who decides to take advantage of the ongoing feud between two rival warlords who just so happen to live right across the street from each other. They are compelled to "hate thy neighbor" because they believe the well in the middle of the town is the only source of water for miles. If they did only the laziest of digging, they would find there is plenty of water in the ground, but let's not let that ruin the story.

THE WARRIOR AND THE SORCERESS features a plethora of nudity, lizard puppets, and sword slap fighting. People are able to escape from captivity with the slightest of ease and they drown captives in a tank of water which seems crazy since water is the most precious commodity in the town. Oh well.

Like it or not, THE WARRIOR AND THE SORCERESS wraps up 2025 for us and we want to thank all of you for listening. It's been a wild and fun year. Can you believe we talked about THE TIN DRUM and JIMMY THE KID this year? I dare you to find a podcast with that kind of diversity. See you in 2026!
