  • Five-star Rovers perform comeback
    2026/07/15

  • Rovers suffer in Malta and face an uphill battle
    2026/07/08

Episode 41 - Rovers suffer in Malta and face an uphill battle

Ryan Brennan and Adam Casey are recording this one minute after the full-time whistle from Malta. Floriana 2, Shamrock Rovers 0. Champions League first qualifying round, first leg. It was not a good night, and we're not here to make it sound better than it was.

In Segment 1, we give the result the honest assessment it deserves. What went wrong in Malta? Was this a failure of preparation, execution, or are Floriana a better side than the pre-tie narrative suggested? We go through the game beat by beat — what the defeat actually looked like, where Rovers were exposed, whether there were any positives to take, and what a 2-0 first leg deficit genuinely means in the context of this tie. We don't do damage limitation on this podcast. If it was a bad performance, we'll say so. If there are mitigating factors, we'll name them honestly.

In Segment 2, we change gear. Jonathan Afolabi has been officially confirmed as a Shamrock Rovers player on a multi-year deal — a signing confirmed before the first leg was played. We go beyond the announcement and into what it actually means. Stephen Bradley described the signing as a changing of the guard, and that phrase is carrying significant weight. Afolabi is not the same profile as the forwards Rovers have relied on. He's a central striker — hold-up play, reference point, finishes from inside the box. We trace his career from the Rovers academy as a kid, to Southampton, to Celtic, to Bohemians, where he finished joint top scorer in the League of Ireland Premier Division in 2023 with 15 goals, to Kortrijk in Belgium, where it didn't work, and now back to Tallaght. We ask whether this is a step forward for him or a return to his level — and we challenge the comfortable homecoming narrative. We also ask what it means for Michael Noonan, who has been getting into the right positions but not converting. Does Afolabi's arrival change the expectation on him?

In Segment 3, we look ahead to Tuesday night's second leg at Tallaght Stadium. Rovers need to overturn a 2-0 deficit in front of their home support to progress to the next round of Champions League qualifying. We assess what's realistically required, what Floriana will try to do at Tallaght, where Rovers can hurt them if they get the tactics right, and what the atmosphere at Tallaght means in a European context. We also ask the hard question — is this tie already over, or is there A genuine belief that Rovers can turn it around?

  • Pico does the nation proud, Rovers win away
    2026/07/05

Episode 40 of The Milltown Way — the independent Shamrock Rovers podcast. Ryan Brennan flies solo for the most loaded episode of the season so far. Three points at Sligo. A Rovers player on the world stage. Some transfer business is completed. And the Champions League is around the corner.

We start with Friday night's win at The Showgrounds. Rovers came from behind to win 2-1, and Graham Burke was outstanding. Fitzgerald was given acres of space to score at 13 minutes, Stevens was troubled by the long ball from the first whistle, and Rovers created almost nothing of note before half-time. The substitutions made a difference, but so did the red card at 52 minutes. We ask the uncomfortable question: would the second half have looked the same against eleven men? We also look at Michael Noonan's four missed chances, the Sobowale situation, and what the performance actually tells us ahead of Monday's European tie.

Then we turn to Roberto 'Pico' Lopes. On Friday night in Miami, a man from Crumlin, Dublin, spent 120 minutes marking Lionel Messi. Cape Verde fell behind three times against the reigning world champions and fought back twice before losing 3–2 to Argentina in extra time. We tell the full story, from the LinkedIn message written in Portuguese that Lopes ignored for nine months, thinking it was spam, to the moment his family watched on as he walked out at Hard Rock Stadium. We also ask what this actually means for the League of Ireland, and challenge the comfortable version of that story.

Transfer news: Jonathan Afolabi is strongly linked with a move to Tallaght — we assess the credibility of the link and push back on the easy narrative. Sean Murphy has signed from UCD, a smart developmental piece of business, but let's not overstate it. And Trevor Clarke moves to Dundalk on an 18-month deal; we give an honest account of where his Rovers career ended up and why that departure hurts less than the sentiment suggests.

We close with a full preview of Tuesday's Champions League first qualifying round first leg against Floriana in Malta. This includes something we suspect most previews will miss: Floriana's green and white colours date back to 1905, when the Royal Dublin Fusiliers were stationed in the town and played three friendlies against the club. Floriana changed their kit to match the Irish soldiers. Their official nickname to this day is 'Tal-Irish' — the Irish. When Rovers run out at Centenary Stadium, they'll be facing a club whose identity was literally built around an Irish connection. We also cover their European history, previous meetings with Irish clubs, the injury concerns for Rovers, what a successful first leg looks like, and why Rovers should be going to Malta to win — not to survive.

  • Rovers sink Galway as Pico continues writing World Cup history
    2026/06/29

Episode 39 - Rovers sink Galway as Pico continues writing World Cup history

In Episode 39 of The Milltown Way, we look back on Shamrock Rovers' 3-1 win over Galway United at Tallaght Stadium, a result that papered over a slow, sluggish opening 35 minutes before two goals in first-half stoppage time changed the game completely.

We break down how Rovers controlled large spells without incision early on, despite finishing with 67% possession and a 15-7 shot advantage, before Adam Brennan's driving runs down the left turned the game on its head. Greene's header, McGovern's tap-in, and a brilliant solo finish from Michael Noonan made it 3-0 before a late Galway consolation gave the scoreline a slightly closer look than the performance deserved. Is this now a genuine pattern of slow starts worth worrying about, or just a side that knows how to find another gear when it needs to?

That Noonan goal feeds straight into our next talking point: Stephen Bradley's striking comments on the teenager's future, where the Rovers boss said he "doesn't see Michael not being here until the end of the season at least." With Noonan turning 18 at the end of July and an ongoing FIFA review tied to an agency agreement connected to his contract, was Bradley sounding reassured, or simply managing a live situation in public?

We also preview Tuesday's friendly with Hibernian, a low-stakes outing but a useful chance to assess fringe players and fitness levels ahead of a huge run of fixtures.

The biggest story of the week, though, belongs to Roberto Lopes. Following on from where we left things back in Episode 30, Lopes has made history as the first ever active League of Ireland player to compete at a FIFA World Cup, helping Cape Verde - the third-smallest nation by population ever to qualify - to a stunning 0-0 draw with Spain and a dramatic 2-2 comeback against Uruguay, with Lopes himself making a crucial block on Federico Valverde in Miami. Does a League of Ireland captain holding his own on football's biggest stage change how the league should be talked about?

Finally, attention turns to next Friday's trip to Sligo Rovers. Rovers remain six points clear at the top, but with St Patrick's Athletic holding two games in hand, we discuss whether this represents a genuine banana skin given some recently dropped points, and give our predictions for how it plays out.
