概要

 In the autumn of 2019, I spent a week in Ash Falls, Maine, a town where the clock tower had been frozen at 3:14 for sixty-three years. The man who came to fix it arrived on a Tuesday night, driving an antique pickup with no license plates. He worked only by lantern light, and he never spoke above a whisper. The townspeople said he'd been called in from somewhere else — somewhere older. By Thursday, the clock was ticking again, but something else had started ticking too. Something beneath the streets, beneath the foundation of the church, beneath the dry well on the edge of town. This is what I saw, and what I heard, and what I still dream about when the dark hours stretch too long.
