概要

 January 2023, near the town of Jasper Falls, Wisconsin. The ice storm had taken down the green highway sign at mile marker 112 — the one that told you where you were, where you were going. I stopped to help a man who was trying to fix it in the middle of the night. He wore a yellow reflector vest and carried a toolbox. But his hands were wrong — too long, too pale, moving in a rhythm that had nothing to do with the bolts he was turning. And when the headlights of another car swept over him, I saw that the sign he was holding read the name of a town that doesn't exist. A place called 'Orris Falls.' And he was smiling at me like he'd been waiting for someone to notice. This is a story about roads that remember things they shouldn't, and the people who maintain them — or the things that pretend to.
