I applied for a job at the fireplace shop. Didn't think too much about it, the description sounded like every other job on Indeed. But then I visited the website and poked around the LinkedIn profiles, and WOW! "The Most Interesting Boss in the World!" As if he'd read my bio, where I describe myself as a cross between The Most Interesting Man in the World and Colonel Sanders. And the website gave me a whole new appreciation for fireplaces! It's just a small leap from how I play with fire in my Webers. I was so excited I went down the next day and met one of the hiring managers. The visit went well, he liked my energy, but you know how jobs go. There could be a friend of the boss, or someone who doesn't like me saying something. You just never know. But here's what I think of fire, water, earth, and air.

  • In the Right Kind of Light, Glass Really Does Look A Lot Like Candy

My wife's been watching that Netflix series, Blown Away, the one about the glass blowers. I watched them blowing candy out of glass, and it got me thinking, why doesn't somebody combine a glass blowing studio with a candy store. Wouldn't that be freakin' AMAZING???

In this episode, I recorded an intro video for the position of Assistant Program Director at WOW 104.3 Country here in Boise. I have no prior radio experience, but maybe they've got some other opening that would be a good fit. Regardless, I'm throwing my hat into the ring, and let's see what happens.

  • The Story Behind The Story of The Push Button Pee Pee

At breakfast this morning, my friend Jim said "hey, why don't you tell The Story of The Push Button Pee Pee on your podcast?" He's already seen the story over at YouTube.com/@lbkatz. So I thought, you know what, I'll go you one better. I'll tell The Story BEHIND The Story of The Push Button Pee Pee. It's no ordinary story. It may have been a factor behind my getting fired from the credit union, although so far I can't prove it. It'd be great if I could, because that would mean ageism and a wrongful termination lawsuit. Until I can do that, though, I'll have to be satisfied with what I did end up with, which is nothing.

  • Some Like It Hot Chocolate
    2025/12/27

Here in Boise, there's nowhere to get decent hot chocolate. Unless you make your own. Which I did, eventually. Here's an excerpt from today's show:

Coffee and hot chocolate are generally incompatible, but I needed something to tide me over the coffee withdrawals. The thought of the overly sweet, watery coffeehouse variety didn’t appeal to me. Besides, too expensive. But I’d been experimenting with chocolate bars and sweetened condensed milk at home. This could be exactly what I needed to keep me from going through the drive through ceiling.

  • You've Got Your Hooks In Me

An excerpt from the latest episode:

I convinced myself that hot chocolate is good for me. Not the kind in a pouch. The kind you have to get up half an hour early to make, because it involves measuring and mixing ingredients. Cocoa powder and chocolate bars have iron in them. Now I feel like Iron Man. I’ve gotten so good at hot chocolate, I’m pitching a workshop to Williams Sonoma called SOME LIKE IT HOT CHOCOLATE. I’ll have to use their gadgets, which spoils the purity of the concept. I’m not happy about that, but I can live with some compromise, as long as I’m being paid.

  • Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Read "Sybil"

A 1966 Toyota Corona four door is no kind of car for a road trip. But that’s all we had when daddy decided to downsize after that glorious white Chrysler Newport (I think it was a ‘63). When you’re a kid you don’t get why things happen like that, but later on I learned he’d lost his well paying civil engineering job with a private company, and after that he went to work for the city for a lot less money. The car had to go. We had two of those 66 Coronas, one for my dad and one for my mom. My dad assumed she’d pass the driving test, but she didn’t, so he’d switch between the two depending on mood or if he’d been driving one for longer than necessary. I think it ended up a race to see which one would hit 100k first.
