- The sliding patio door was locked from the inside with a hook-and-eye mechanism and the six-foot wooden fence made outside placement difficult without climbing.
- Nancy Olson lived alone in apartment fourteen, turned 24 in October 1986, worked 18 months as a design assistant at Haverfield Creative, and owned a tabby cat named Biscuit.
- Detective Pete Kosar collected a partial fingerprint from the interior bathroom window frame and two cotton swabs (from the shirt collar and the interior front door handle); all were sealed and frozen in January 1987.
