The Loafer, the Receipt and the Secret That Spent Thirty Years

A single brown loafer, size seven, placed upright on a cold-storage ledge with no footprints in the frost and a pharmacy receipt folded inside - how did one shoe become the quiet center of a thirty-year mystery? The receipt was made out to G. Olson and dated two days before her body was found; who left the shoe, and why did that detail wait three decades to matter?

In this episode, we lay out the facts of the case as recorded in the original file and follow how an old evidence box resurfaced during a digitization project, raising the question that drove both the first and later investigators: what vital clue did the shoe hide that was missed in 1973?

Person: Gina Olson
Date: January 7-9, 1973
Location: Fulton County fairground / Callum
Status: Cold case reopened in 2003
Investigator: Detective Erin Miller

- A brown leather loafer, size seven, was found upright on the concrete ledge of the cold-storage building with toe pointing north and heel down.
- No second shoe was found within a quarter mile and there were no footprints in the frost on the access path.
- A folded pharmacy receipt dated January 7, 1973, made out to G. Olson and listing iron supplement tablets for $0.89 was inside the toe of the shoe.
- Gina Olson, age forty-four, was found strangled three days after the receipt date in the drainage ditch behind the fairground’s east fence, with her left foot bare.
- The original investigator, Walt Novak, always approached the cold-storage building from the south, a consistent choice that later detectives noted may have influenced the early inquiry.
