    Faith's Bio-Faith Borkowsky, the founder of High Five Literacy, LLC, is an internationally respected and sought-after literacy consultant, certified dyslexia practitioner, and award-winning author and speaker. She has over thirty-five years of experience in literacy instruction - as a classroom teacher, reading and learning specialist, regional literacy coach, administrator, and private tutor. Faith counsels and provides professional development for school districts and teachers,
    and offers parent workshops, presentations, and private consultations on science-based literacy practices. She is the author of the award-winning book, Failing Students or Failing Schools? A Parent’s Guide to Reading Instruction and Intervention, and the “If Only I Would Have Known…” series of books, conceived as a roadmap for literacy-readiness and success for parents of young children. Faith regularly blogs about literacy issues and tirelessly advocates for community-based solutions to promote literacy for all children and social justice. She works with school districts and community-based literacy professionals all over the world, and in 2021, Faith was a finalist for the World Literacy Foundation Award for her significant contributions to literacy.
    Faith is honored to have a role in the 2022 feature-length documentary, The Truth About Reading.

    Judy's Bio-Judy Boksner has over 25 years of New York City Education experience as an educator, classroom teacher, coach, and reading specialist. Judy works with teachers and children all throughout areas in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Greenwich Ct. She has extensive training in evidence-based methodologies such as Orton Gillingham, Wilson’s Fundations, and The Hochman Method, also known as The Writing Revolution. Judy's work may be seen and followed on her show The Literacy View YouTube channel and
    podcast where Judy and her co-host Faith Borkowsky discuss and interview some
    of the leading voices in education about shifting to evidence and science aligned
    practices to accelerate student outcomes. Judy works with many private clients as a reading specialist and is also teaching mini courses at Manhattanville College.

    Sold a Story Christopher Peak joins us to discuss his THREE APRIL articles with us about the collapse of literacy giants: Reading Recovery, Lucy Calkins, and Fountas and Pinnell, along with Heinemann Publishing.

    Christopher Peak Bio:
    Christopher Peak is an investigative reporter who covers education for APM Reports. He co-reported “Sold a Story,” a podcast about a disproven approach to teaching reading used in
    many elementary schools. The series was one of Apple’s most shared podcasts in 2023. It won a DuPont-Columbia, a National Edward R. Murrow Award, an IRE Award, a Third Coast Award and
    two Scripps Howard awards, and it was nominated for a Peabody. Following its release, at least 16 states passed new laws about reading instruction, and school districts nationwide, including New York City, announced they would no longer use programs covered in the podcast. Peak
    previously covered schools for the New Haven Independent. He was a finalist for the Education
    Writers Association’s national award for beat reporting, and he won numerous regional awards,
    including Connecticut SPJ's First Amendment Award. Peak has also written for Nation Swell, the Point Reyes Light, Newsday and the San Francisco Public Press.

    Kathleen Rastle is a cognitive psychologist and Professor of Cognitive Psychology at Royal Holloway, University of London where she was previously the Head of Department of
    Psychology (2015-2019). Her research has made fundamental contributions to understanding of
    reading and learning to read. Dr. Rastle has a strong interest in translating her research to
    improve policies and practices relevant to how children around the world are taught to read.

    Catherine Cook, B.Ed., Library Diploma, is a recently recently retired teacher with experience
    teaching Kindergarten to Grade 12, ESL, and Reading Recovery. She used a Balanced Literacy
    approach for 15 years before she discovered the Science of Reading and made the shift to
    Structured Literacy. Catherine is currently working as a Reading Tutor.
    John McGrath is a New York attorney representing parents and their children in meetings of
    school district Committees on Special Education and section 504. He also represents them in
    special education and section 504 due process hearings and appeals. He was a member of the
    Mineola School Board from 1997 to 2012.
