  • Welcome to the Learning Lifestyle Podcast, where learning is a lifestyle cultivated at home. My name is Jennie and I coach parents who want to create a family culture of learning. Whether they do most learning at home, or they use other resources such as school, I believe every family can establish a House of Learning. This podcast will discuss elements that foster curiosity and natural learning, creating systems that honor your family values and meet your unique needs, and other ways to do what I call intentional unschooling, or learning through a values-driven life.

  • Freedom in Homeschool: Alexa's Coaching Call
    2023/11/27
Alexa is a new homeschooling mom, trying to check all the boxes to be sure she's giving her preschooler the best start. In this call, we try to get clear about her real values, and how she can check those boxes rather than being bogged down by what school should look like. We create a system that provides flexibility for her family and encourages self-directed learning for her already reading preschooler. • Day 1 What are you looking forward to this summer?
    2023/08/01
One thing I've learned in five years of home education is that systems play an important role in saving our brains from decision fatigue and overwhelm. Whether we are aware of them or not, we are always operating in a system of our habits. School is a system. It is one decision (go to school) that determines many decisions (daily, weekly and annual schedules, what to learn, when and how, when to go to the bathroom and when to get a drink, and sometimes what to wear). When kids come home from school, whether to start homeschool or for summer break, we need to replace the system we have been currently operating under, with a new system...that is, if we want to avoid decision fatigue. Decision fatigue for kids usually looks like "I'm bored." We can fall into a system, we can borrow a system, or we can intentionally create a system. I recommend the last option, and that's what my 7 day challenge is designed to help you create! It will be a simple system that fosters your kids' natural learning, supports independence, and honors the values and needs of your individual family. And one of those needs can be flexibility! It's built in! This episode goes over the first challenge of seven. I hope you will join me! • Values-Driven Life: Making Peace with Screen Time, pt. 5
    2023/07/18

How to deal with mom guilt when it comes to making healthy boundaries around technology use. In this episode we discuss how our values determine what we give our time to, or what we think we "should" give our time to. The latter is the cause of most "mom guilt"--whether it's a judgement about how we are using our own time or how we are allowing our kids to use their time. To make peace with ourselves (or our mom guilt) and peace with our kids, we need to get clear about what we value, and make systems that help us live in alignment with our values on our most tired days. Let's talk about how!
