Summer of 2019. A ranger stationed at Sutter Creek Bridge in Sequoia National Forest begins noticing a pattern in the logs: every few weeks, a single set of footprints crosses the bridge at 3:17 AM, heading east, with no matching tracks coming back. The trail always ends at the creek bank, where the water is shallow enough to wade. But the footprints never enter the water. They just stop. Then one morning, she finds a damp, silt-stained journal wedged under a rock on the far bank, filled with entries that seem to be written in anticipation of events that haven't happened yet.
