The Lantern at Pell's Fork: Footprints That Never Were

Fear tightens around a single unexplained fact: a tin lantern appears at the same fork of Caldwell Road every odd-numbered June for decades, and in 1893 a woman’s body was found beneath that signpost with a pair of shoes placed neatly on the road thirty feet away. What links a century-spanning record, a legal timber agreement, and a boot impression no living person has explained?

In this episode, we follow the documentary trail found in church registers, land transfer records, coroner notes, and local petitions to lay out the sequence of events and the unanswered question that binds them: who left those shoes and why was the coroner’s report silent about them?

Person: Kathleen Watson
Date: June 1, 1893
Location: Pell's Fork, Caldwell Road, Merrills, Tallen Parish, Louisiana
Event: Body recovered from drainage ditch; lantern found nearby

- A tin lantern was hung from a signpost above the drainage ditch at Pell’s Fork and photographed from three angles by Frank York on June 14, 2011.
- The lanter n has been documented at that exact spot in every odd-numbered June back to at least 1962.
- Kathleen Watson, age 47, had kept a lantern lit on new-moon nights for two years before her death.
- Alton Watson’s June 1891 marginal note in the Merrills First Presbyterian register states: "K.W. to keep the light at the Fork on account of the agreement."
- Robert Teal found Kathleen’s body and recovered a pair of black walking shoes placed side by side on the Caldwell Road surface about thirty feet from the ditch; the shoes were later inventoried in her sister Ida’s personal effects but omitted from Coroner Everett Cage’s report.
