• Shannon Hill – Master Planning the Future of Land Development
    2026/05/15

Welcome to Season 3 of The Land Pioneers Podcast!

We are delighted to feature Shannon Hill, Associate Director of Urban Design & Management, a highly respected planning professional shaping the future of urban communities across Victoria. With deep expertise in strategic planning, infrastructure coordination, and complex land development approvals, Shannon brings a grounded yet forward-thinking perspective to the evolving challenges facing today’s development landscape.

From navigating infrastructure levies and planning frameworks to balancing sustainability targets with commercial viability, Shannon sits at the intersection of policy, design, and delivery. In this episode, we explore how modern planning is transforming—and what it takes for developers to succeed in an increasingly complex environment.

    Full Episode

Shannon Hill’s career revolves around navigating complex planning systems to achieve practical, high-quality development outcomes. At Urban Design & Management, she works closely with developers, councils, and authorities—guiding projects from due diligence through to approval within evolving planning frameworks and master planning processes. A key focus of her work is responding to Victoria’s housing targets, where new planning codes and requirements, such as tree canopy coverage, are reshaping how developments are designed and delivered.

As sustainability targets and planning controls intensify, developers are moving beyond standard housing models towards more bespoke, design-led solutions. Rising infrastructure levies, alongside constraints such as drainage and cultural heritage, are putting pressure on feasibility and land values. Shannon highlights that strong due diligence and strategic master planning are now essential—helping balance commercial outcomes while delivering more connected and liveable communities.

The conversation also explores the importance of site-responsive design, particularly across complex infill sites and growth areas. Shannon discusses how master planning is evolving to deliver walkable, mixed-use activity centres, alongside integrating natural waterways and landscape-led design into communities. Ultimately, while development has become more complex, it is also creating opportunities for more thoughtful, sustainable, and future-ready urban environments.

  • Cameron George – Building Systems, Leadership, from a Lifetime in Construction
    2026/03/27

Welcome to Season 3, Episode 3 of The Land Pioneers Podcast!

We are excited to feature Cameron George, operations manager at Escape Homes, a seasoned professional with more than three decades of experience across the construction and residential housing industries. Cameron’s journey spans sales, marketing, construction operations, and project management—giving him a rare, full-spectrum perspective on how successful homebuilding businesses operate.

In this episode, Cameron shares his insights on construction workflows, operational efficiency, industry resilience, and the evolving challenges facing modern home builders. We explore the systems that help manage hundreds of projects at once, the importance of strong trade relationships, and how companies like Escape Homes have navigated the turbulence of the post-COVID construction landscape.

    Full Episode

Cameron George’s journey into construction began early, working on building sites during school holidays through his father, who was a plumber and gas fitter. That hands-on exposure gave him a practical understanding of the industry from a young age.

After completing school and university, Cam entered real estate, initially expecting it to be a short-term path. Instead, it quickly opened new opportunities and led him towards selling new housing developments, where his interest shifted from selling homes to understanding how they were built.

That curiosity became the foundation of a long career in construction. Over the years, Cameron built experience across sales, marketing, administration, operations, and on-site delivery—giving him a broad understanding of the entire housing process.

A major turning point in his career came through the influence of a strong mentor, who introduced him to structured workflow systems and project tracking. These lessons shaped Cameron’s operational approach and helped him become known for bringing order, efficiency, and accountability into growing construction businesses.

Throughout his career, Cameron worked across high-volume building environments, helping manage large numbers of projects and refining systems that improved reporting, visibility, and performance. His work showed how the right processes can make a major difference in construction delivery.

Following a significant personal transition, Cam stepped away from the industry for a while, only to realise how deeply connected he still was to the work. That passion eventually led him back into the sector and into his role with Escape Homes.

At Escape Homes, Cameron found a company whose values aligned strongly with his own—particularly its commitment to quality, long-term relationships, continuous improvement, and paying trades and suppliers on time. He has since helped strengthen the company’s operational systems, improve customer communication, and support a more streamlined building process.

  • Ben Howard – Where You Start Doesn’t Decide Where You Finish
    2026/02/20

Welcome again to Season 3 of The Land Pioneers Podcast!

Episode 2 of Season 3 is with Ben Howard, founder of Monopoly Group and a true pioneer in strategic land development and real estate investing. Ben turned early hardship into opportunity, building a property portfolio and career across Australia and the UK, and bringing a refreshingly honest perspective to our podcast.

In this episode, we explore how Ben’s early life experiences shaped his passion for business and property, and how he turned adversity into an advantage through creativity, hustle, and a commitment to growth.

    Full Episode

Ben’s story begins far from the boardrooms of land development. After the devastating loss of his two brothers to suicide, Ben left school in Year 10 and found himself without direction, support, or a place to call home. For five years, he lived on a homeless allowance, couch-surfed, and struggled to make sense of his circumstances.

Yet within that chaos, a spark ignited. Music became his emotional outlet and first entry into entrepreneurship. Through band promotions and event organising, Ben discovered his love for building things — not just in music, but in business. He began investing in traditional residential real estate, and after enrolling in a business course, he began offering to write free business plans for local stores in Rundle Mall, using lunchtime hours to sharpen his skills.

At 19, he purchased his first home—a $69,000 ex-housing trust property in Taperoo—using a first home buyer’s grant and borrowed money for the deposit. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was cash-flow positive. His mentor explained the value of yield and equity, and from that moment, Ben was hooked.

What followed was a rapid expansion into real estate. By his early 30s, he had bought, sold, or held nearly 20 properties. But growth wasn’t always linear. He quickly learned the difference between equity and cash flow, how serviceability limits affect scalability, and the importance of having adaptable income streams.

When banks tightened lending during a market shift, Ben didn’t collapse — he pivoted. He returned to event production, organising major dance competitions and concerts to sustain his momentum.

Later, Ben moved to London with his partner. He applied for many jobs without formal qualifications before landing a junior sales role. Through persistence and follow-up, he eventually became Head of Entertainment – Sales at The SSE Arena, Wembley, managing events, exhibitions, and large-scale contracts. That experience deepened his negotiation, sales, and international project management knowledge—skills that would become core to his property development success.

Ben returned to Australia with a renewed focus. Through Monopoly Group, he began acquiring and developing land in high-growth areas, particularly those aligned with future government infrastructure. His developments in South Australia and Victoria reflect a strategic, forward-looking approach — investing in the corridors of tomorrow, not just the opportunities of today.

  • Minister Nick Champion – Strategic Growth and the Future of South Australia’s Communities
    2026/01/28

Welcome to Season 3 of The Land Pioneers Podcast!

We are honoured to present today’s episode featuring The Honourable Nick Champion, South Australia’s Planning Minister — a driving force behind the state’s strategic planning, housing infrastructure, and urban development reforms. With responsibility for Housing and Urban Development, Infrastructure, and Planning, as well as oversight of SA Water, Minister Champion brings a deeply informed and visionary perspective to the challenges and opportunities shaping South Australia’s built environment.

Since taking on the portfolio, Minister Champion and his team have been instrumental in elevating South Australia’s planning system — with outcomes that are increasingly recognised across the nation, including Adelaide being named Australia’s happiest city for 2025. Today’s conversation offers rare insight into how thoughtful policy and practical action are transforming the state’s growth corridors, housing landscape, and future communities. We can’t wait to share his journey, insights, and the bold initiatives reshaping South Australia’s planning future.

    Full Episode

In this episode, Minister Nick Champion joins us to discuss the evolution, reforms, and future directions of South Australia’s planning and housing sectors— and why clarity, predictability, and strategic infrastructure investment are essential to sustainable growth.

Minister Champion begins by reflecting on the state’s planning transformation. Over successive governments, South Australia has built a digital, code‑based planning system that delivers certainty for property owners and investors alike—a system rooted in bipartisan support and predictability rather than complexity. According to Minister Champion, this approach avoids the pitfalls of convoluted regulations that slow development and deter capital, allowing good projects to move forward efficiently while respecting private property rights.

The discussion then turns to recent planning reforms, including the Future Living Code Amendment and changes to the Accommodation Diversity Code Amendment. These reforms aim to create more flexible housing typologies—such as accessory dwelling units—and provide homeowners and developers with more creative ways to deliver diverse, functional, and site-responsive homes without sacrificing amenity or community character. Early examples, such as adaptive reuse in the City of Adelaide, unlocking new housing within small properties, illustrate how even modest policy shifts can make space for hundreds more residents and enliven urban precincts.

Population growth and its implications for land development are next on the agenda. Minister Champion highlights how strong interstate migration and a growing jobs market have strengthened Adelaide’s appeal. With that growth in mind, the Greater Adelaide Regional Plan is guiding development in both established and emerging corridors—from inner‑city neighbourhoods like Southwark, Bowden, and Highmarsh to evolving growth fronts further afield. He emphasises strategic infill, infrastructure availability, and transport connectivity as key anchors for the state’s future communities.

Minister Champion also shines a spotlight on regional opportunities — especially places like Murray Bridge, which he describes as well‑positioned to become a vibrant regional centre with both housing and employment potential. He explains how local economic strengths, such as food manufact

  • Judi Carr – From Property Strategy to People-Powered Sales
    2025/11/21

Welcome to the grand finale of Season 2 of The Land Pioneers Podcast! This marks not just the final episode of the season, but our last release for 2025.

And we’ve saved one of the very best for last.

We’re excited to feature a standout guest in the world of property marketing and community building — Judi Carr, founder of Property Republic and co-founder of PropSquad. With over 30 years of industry experience, Judi brings a fresh, honest, and practical approach to how land estates are planned, promoted, and brought to life.

In this episode, she shares real stories, actionable insights, and powerful lessons on why great communities start with great communication — and how smarter, simpler marketing strategies can drive long-term success.

Don’t miss this inspiring episode for this season!

    Full Episode

Judi Carr has worked with some of Australia’s most prominent property developers, including Stockland, Lendlease, Mirvac, and Lifestyle Communities. In 2012, she started Property Republic to help developers put the customer at the centre of every decision. More recently, she co-founded PropSquad — a clever new way to let residents help market their neighbourhoods by sharing their experiences and getting rewarded for it.

Judi’s work is about building strong connections between developers and communities — and it’s based on honest conversations, not just marketing slogans. In this episode, she explains how PropSquad came to life, what developers often get wrong about branding and communication, and how to keep things simple while delivering outstanding results.

    Key Insights from the Podcast

From Industry Leader to Independent Thinker: Judi’s early work with UDIA and Stockland gave her a front-row seat to how big communities are built. But she quickly saw a gap — too many decisions were being made without hearing from the people who would actually live there.

Why She Started Property Republic: Judi wanted to bring a fresh approach to project marketing — one focused more on the people than the packaging. Her goal is to help developers truly understand their buyers and build places where people are proud to call home.

The Story Behind PropSquad: Frustrated by outdated “refer-a-friend” programs, Judi and her business partner Monika, created PropSquad — an easy-to-use platform that helps residents become community ambassadors. It’s simple: share your love for where you live, invite others to check it out, and get rewarded if they make a purchase.

Curious how PropSquad is changing the game? Check out the Eagle Vision Propsquad Link!

A Real Example — Woodlea: In just 10 weeks, PropSquad helped generate over $5.5 million in sales for the Woodlea community in Melbourne’s west. Judi explains how the program works, how it stays fair and secure, and why it’s proving to be more powerful than traditional advertising.

Building Real Communities Takes Commitment: Judi discusses openly what happens when developers reduce community support during tough times — and why short-term decisions can cause long-term damage. The best projects, she says, are the ones that invest in people from day one.

  • James Polacek: Inside South Australia’s Land Market
    2025/10/17

Welcome to Episode 20 of The Land Pioneers Podcast. We’re joined by James Polacek, Director at Polly Property and one of South Australia’s most respected voices in land project marketing.

With a deep, practical understanding of both broadacre and infill developments, James brings a uniquely grounded perspective on what it takes to sell, scale, and create successful communities in a changing market. In this episode, he shares hard-won insights on the evolution of display homes, the shifting dynamics of regional migration in South Australia, and the traits young professionals need to succeed in a project marketing career.

If you’ve ever wondered how land developers adapt to buyer behaviour, regional pressure points, or digital-first marketing environments, this is an unmissable conversation.

    Let’s dive in!

    Full Episode

James Polacek’s experience in land development runs deep. At Polly Property, he leads a nimble and collaborative team focused on navigating the real-world complexities of sales, product delivery, and customer trust in high-growth markets like Mount Barker, Murray Bridge, and Metro Adelaide.

In this conversation, James reflects on how buyer expectations have shifted—from once relying on the “must-see” display home to now trusting digital representations and virtual tools. He discusses the reality behind ROI-driven decisions on display infrastructure and how developers are adapting to deliver more with less.

James also breaks down the evolving drivers of regional migration. He highlights how affordability, once a leading factor for towns like Mount Barker, is now being overtaken by lifestyle decisions and work-from-home capabilities. Meanwhile, towns like Murray Bridge are seeing more permanent, employment-based population growth rather than commuter-dependent demand.

Finally, for those looking to enter the industry, James offers a masterclass on what it really takes to succeed. His top three traits are patience, deep product understanding, and an unwavering commitment to collaboration.

    Key Insights from the Podcast

    1. From Display Homes to Digital Confidence
James explains how the traditional role of display homes is shifting. While still useful, many buyers are now confident enough to commit without physically stepping into a show home—driven by digital fluency and changing developer priorities.
    2. Regional Growth with Real Purpose
Towns like Mount Barker and Murray Bridge are no longer just “affordable alternatives”. James discusses how lifestyle change, infrastructure investment, and local employment are redefining the growth story in these key regions.
    3. The Reality of ROI in Land Sales
With rising costs, developers are questioning the return on traditional marketing tools like display suites. James outlines how this conversation has evolved and how savvy operators are adapting with leaner, smarter models.
    4. Patience Over Pressure
Newcomers to the industry take note: James emphasises that success in project marketing isn’t about fast wins—it’s about consistency, relationship-building, and the long game.
    5. Mastery Through Learning
Unlike selling a renovated villa, land sales demand a granular understanding of product design, pricing, buildability, and staging. James explains why true professionals invest in learning the details.

  • Anthony Braunthal — Founding Grit Leads to Scalable Success
    2025/09/19

Welcome to Episode 19 of The Land Pioneers Podcast. We’re joined by a dynamic leader whose entrepreneurial mind and strategic foresight have helped build one of Australia’s most successful land development firms—Anthony Braunthal, co-founder and director at Resi Ventures.

With over 25 years of experience spanning government, corporate enterprise, and a string of thriving startups, Anthony brings a rare breadth of knowledge to the land development world. In this episode, we dive into the story behind Resi Ventures’ billion-dollar pipeline, uncovering the mindset and methods that have powered its rise.

From early beginnings at the ATO to tech success stories and now transformative land partnerships, Anthony shares how a systems-driven approach, a relentless work ethic, and a commitment to continuous personal growth laid the foundation for long-term success.

Whether you’re scaling a property business or looking to sharpen your leadership edge, this conversation offers timeless lessons on resilience, strategy, and trust-based partnerships.

    Full Episode

Anthony Braunthal’s entrepreneurial journey is a powerful blend of sharp financial acumen, curiosity-driven learning, and fearless decision-making. Starting straight out of university with a role at the ATO, Anthony’s natural inclination towards understanding business models—not just auditing them—foreshadowed his future as a serial founder.

While many would have settled into a secure government career, Anthony had other ideas. With a business plan in hand and an appetite for building, he left the public sector to launch his first venture—an investor education business focused on the share market. That decision marked the beginning of a career defined by startups, strategic exits, and scalable business models across IT, HR, and ultimately—property.

His biggest leap came in 2010, when he partnered with Khurram Saeed to co-found Resi Ventures, a land development firm now holding over $1 billion in projects in its pipeline. The idea was simple but bold: partner directly with landowners to supersize their returns. Together, they created a new model that married Khurram’s profound property knowledge with Anthony’s financial and operational expertise.

In this conversation, Anthony reflects on the importance of trust-based partnerships, the reality of risk-taking, and the invisible systems that support long-term growth. He opens up about his meditation practice, his use of data-driven performance tools like WHOOP, and the daily disciplines that keep him sharp, calm, and effective in high-pressure roles.

What stands out is not just Anthony’s track record but also his philosophy. He believes in continuous and never-ending improvement, surrounding himself with talent, building culture, and scaling only what’s proven. At Resi Ventures, this mindset shows up in everything from recruitment to project delivery.
