Cold, methodical, and impossible: an ice axe with an orange handle appears in a town parking lot forty-one miles from the nearest peak while four climbers lie dead and one teacher is missing - his laminated card sat on his desk the whole time. What choice did a meticulous man make in seconds on a couloir when a serac fractured between him and four teammates?
In this episode, you’ll hear the timeline from camp to collapse, the gear found and missing, and the single written note that reframes the final decision on Arrowglass - did he cut the rope to save others, or was there another reason behind that act?
Person: James Davis
Date: November 1, 2019
Location: Arrowglass upper couloir, ~12,400 ft
Event: Serac fracture and rope cuts
Status: Laminated card found on Davis’s desk
- Davis taught history at Ridder Falls High for 22 years and laminated route notes and safety cards.
- The team reached Arrowglass trailhead on October 28 and were in high camp at ~10,600 ft by October 30.
- Davis radioed last transmission at 6:00 AM on November 1 reporting favorable conditions and intent to push for the summit.
- At ~10:00 AM on November 1 a serac fractured ~300 ft below the summit plateau, isolating Davis above the fracture and four teammates below.
- SAR recovered 60 meters of rope cut into sections with straight perpendicular blade-like cuts; the termini attached to Davis’s end were missing.
