In the autumn of 1889, a country doctor in Skiddy, Kansas did something no physician had ever publicly documented before. He died. And then he came back to tell the world exactly what he saw.

Dr. A.S. Wiltse was struck down by a violent case of typhoid fever. His pulse faded, his breathing stopped, and the family gathered around his bed believing the end had come. He called them in to say goodbye. And then, as the room fell silent, Wiltse's consciousness slipped out of his body and he found himself floating above the bed, watching his own corpse and the grief of everyone he loved.

This episode tells his astonishing account, first published in the St. Louis Medical and Surgical Journal in November 1889 and later preserved by the great psychical researcher F.W.H. Myers in Human Personality and Its Survival of Bodily Death. Wiltse described passing through a dim and strange region before emerging into a landscape of unearthly beauty, a world of vivid trees, flowers, and light more real than anything he had known on earth. He saw a great wall of radiance and understood that beyond it lay a glory he was not yet permitted to enter. Then, against his will, he was sent back to the body he had left behind.

The experience shattered the doctor's materialism. He spent the rest of his life telling anyone who would listen that consciousness survives the death of the body, and his account remains one of the most important early medical testimonies to the reality of the near-death experience.
