  • Message: Focused on the Father
    2025/07/02

Mark 1:35-45: Focused on the Father

On Day Six of the ill-fated mission of Apollo 13, the astronauts were attempting to return to earth after an explosion crippled their spacecraft. To conserve the limited power remaining in their batteries, they had to shut down the onboard computer that steered the aircraft. But there was a problem. They were drifting off course and were not going to hit their entry point through earth’s protective shield. The astronauts needed to do a 39 second controlled burn of their engines to get them back on course, but without a computer, how could they steer?

Astronaut Jim Lovell determined that if they could keep a fixed point in space in view through their tiny window, they could steer the aircraft manually. They just needed an object to focus on in the window…and what was that object?

    Earth!

This was brilliantly shown in the movie Apollo 13. For 39 agonizing seconds the three astronauts burned the engines and did everything they could to keep the earth in the middle of the window! By not losing sight of their reference point and staying FOCUSED on the object of their destination they were able to avoid disaster.

My friends, what can we learn from this?

    Your FOCUS is everything!!

In this message we'll explore these questions:

What is the object of your focus?

Where have you fixed your eyes?

    Hebrews 12:2 (ESV)
2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

This world is fighting hard to divert your eyes in multiple directions. Our culture has motion sickness from the Tilt-a-Whirl we are on…Looking in every direction.

And yet, the example that Jesus sets for us is hidden in PLAIN SIGHT right on the pages of the Gospels.

How did Jesus handle the roller coaster?

How did he keep His focus on the Father?

    Let's take a closer look.

  • Message: Signed By the Author
    2025/06/25

If I were to read a book, study it, and then set about to teach it…you would listen. But you would be listening to my interpretation of what I read as I did my best to explain what I thought the author was trying to communicate.

Now, if I wrote a book and then showed up to teach from the book that I wrote, you would listen with a different set of ears. Because I’m not giving you my best guess on what the author is trying to communicate…

No, I AM the author. And I would be there to TELL you what I meant when I wrote… THIS is the picture of the scene we will read today in Mark 1:21-34…and we will see the response that takes place in the SYNAGOGUE when the AUTHOR and FINISHER of our Faith (Hebrews 12:2) arrived on the scene.

  • Message: The Call to go Fishing
    2025/06/18

It is interesting that the first four disciples called by Jesus are fishermen…We don’t know the occupations of all the twelve disciples.

    Matthew was a tax collector.
    Judas Iscariot was a treasurer.
Peter, Andrew, James, and John were fishermen.
Philip, Nathaniel, James 2, Judas (Thaddeus), Simon the Zealot, and Thomas were probably tradesman of some sort…with the possibility that some of them were fisherman as well.

What we do know about them is that they were not considered to be the “elite” when it came to Following a Rabbi and learning the Law of God.

  • Message: Mark 1:12-12 The Necessity of the Experience!
    2025/06/11

We often want to skip the hard trials of life. We're eager to jump into the great plans God has for us, and our hope is we won't have to face any difficult seasons.

Jesus shows us that a wilderness experience is often what follows the call to serve the Lord. You see, it is necessary to experience difficulty. It strengthens us for the mission ahead.

What is God teaching you in your current experience?
