Meanwhile, I swapped out two busted volume pots: one on my Sunburst Squier Strat after the knob snapped clean off, and another on my Squier loaded with the Dimarzio X2N, where the old pot completely froze up. Both guitars are back in action!     On this epic FOUR-HOUR episode of Talking Guitars on Johnny Beane TV, we went full throttle from start to finish! ⚡🎸 I kicked things off by recapping my hands-on look at the brand-new EVH MXR 5150 Bumblebee Overdrive — the black-and-yellow, Guitar Center–exclusive, limited-edition monster of a pedal. 🐝🔥 We watched my demo video, broke down the tone, and talked all things 5150. From there, we dove into the Seymour Duncan PowerStage 100, pulled up the site, read the specs, and talked about why this little power amp is secretly a rig-changing weapon for gigging players. Then it was off to the Workbench, where Ron mailed in a mystery box PACKED with guitar goodies. We cracked it open live, unboxed everything, and got right into guitar surgery. Ron showed off the BC Rich that Laz sent in for his brother — and let’s just say… that thing’s gonna need major reconstruction. 🛠️😅 I grabbed a loaded pickguard from Ron’s box and slapped it onto one of my Fenders on the spot. It fit perfectly… but the tone? Yeah… those pickups were not the match. So tomorrow on Workbench Wednesday, I’m tearing the guts out, keeping the pickguard, and rebuilding the whole thing live.     On this episode of Straturday Night Live, we’re kicking things off with a brand new intro — and this one’s been four years in the making! 🚁✨ It actually shows the route I take to get to the studio every day… inspired by Grand Theft Auto V. Yes, I finally made the GTA-style DeLorean (the Deluxo!) intro I’ve always wanted. Let me know what you think in the comments! After that, we head straight to the workbenches. Ron dives into a Jackson Warrior project, and I jump between a couple builds of my own. My Strat now has a Seymour Duncan Screamin’ Demon in the bridge, but the nut slots dropped and the action got way too low — so I hit it with the classic superglue + baking soda fix. We’ll revisit this repair next week.     We kicked things off by showing our freshly repainted Samick Avion / Greg Bennett mini guitar — HUGE shout-out to Ron! This little beast started life as a black eBay car guitar, but now it’s a champagne flip-flop copper ripper loaded with an Epiphone humbucker, Pure Tone jack, and Grover tuners. We played it, loved it, ROCKED it. 🤘 Then it was music news time — including the wild story Micky Dolenz calls “the worst tour matchup in rock history”: 🎤 The time Jimi Hendrix opened for The Monkees. Dolenz had seen Hendrix back when he was Jimmy James & the Blue Flames — “the guy who plays guitar with his teeth.” After Hendrix destroyed Monterey Pop in ’67, Dolenz wanted him on The Monkees’ first big U.S. tour. Great idea… in theory. Hendrix’s manager hated it. Dick Clark said anyone could see it wouldn’t work. But it happened anyway. When the tour launched in July ’67, Hendrix shredded while crowds screamed “We want the Monkees!” After eight shows, he was pulled — blamed on fake “complaints” that the act was “too erotic.” Hendrix joked, “I think they’re replacing me with Mickey Mouse.” Still, Dolenz says they remained friends, and he still tells the story at his solo shows. After that, it was Workbench Time! 🛠️ We grabbed the Fender 75th Anniversary Strat, swapped a broken string, dialed in tones through the Line 6 Pod Go, and jammed live.
