    Why does braille have exactly six dots — not five, not eight, not twelve? The answer is hiding in your fingertip.

    In the 1820s, the French army built a secret code called night writing — raised dots soldiers could read in total darkness without lighting a lamp that would reveal their position to enemy snipers. Each letter used twelve dots. It failed — because the human fingertip, sharp as it is, is too small to fit twelve dots in one touch.

    A blind fifteen-year-old boy in Paris named Louis Braille solved what the army couldn't. He cut twelve dots to six — perfectly sized for one fingertip. One touch, one letter. Sixty-three combinations covering every alphabet, number, and even music notation.

    The neuroscience behind it: your fingertip has a two-point discrimination threshold of roughly 2 millimetres — meaning you can feel two separate points that close together. That makes the fingertip the sharpest tactile sensor on the human body. Braille's six-dot cell is engineered to sit exactly within that sensory window.

    Today, a proficient braille reader reads over 100 words per minute. And India's Harmonised Guidelines for Universal Accessibility require braille on lift controls, handrails, and public signage — yet most buildings skip it entirely.
