- A telegraph lineman, Shannon Hansen, found the left hand at 7:00 AM on November 4, 1893.
- The ice block carrying the hand was stamped on its underside with the number 47 and had been part of a 12-block delivery to the Fenwick Hotel on November 1, 1893.
- Hotel receiving clerk Joseph Wren counted eleven blocks in the cellar and found a two-foot-square vacancy with scrape marks where a block had been dragged away.
- Philip Donnelly visited the Fenwick Ice Company office twice in October 1893 and accompanied at least one delivery run to learn routes and block numbering.
- A 2019 DNA match surfaced from a piece of physical evidence that had been sealed inside an archive envelope for more than a century.
