The Honest Middle is a raw, personal podcast about mental health, anxiety, depression, medication, recovery, family, work, fear, hope, and the parts of real life we usually keep hidden.

Hosted by John Knopick, this is not advice from a therapist or an expert standing safely on the other side. It is an honest conversation from inside the struggle—where progress is real, setbacks still happen, answers are incomplete, and none of us has everything figured out.

Each episode explores what it feels like to live through difficult days, question your own progress, search for normalcy, and keep moving even when life does not offer a clean ending. Some episodes may be heavy. Others may be hopeful, funny, reflective, or simply about what it means to be human.

The goal is simple: to help people feel less alone, encourage honest conversation, and build a community where nobody has to pretend they are fine.

Welcome to The Honest Middle—real conversations from the part of life we are still figuring out.

  • Bear Down: The Night I Felt Everything Again
    2026/08/31

Have you ever known you SHOULD be excited about something… but you just couldn’t feel it?

    That was me Saturday.

After more than 40 years as a Chicago Bears fan, I was finally going to my first Bears game — with my wife and son attending their first NFL game too.

And I still felt emotionally flat.

Then somebody started walking down a hallway yelling:

    “Where’s Bubba? Where’s Bubba?”

What happened next involved a Bears coin, being told we couldn’t wear our Bears jerseys in a Titans suite, a stranger named George, one VERY surprising realization about who George actually was 😂, and an invitation that completely changed our night.

For a few hours, the wall disappeared.

I was yelling. Clapping. Singing Bear Down. Laughing. Connecting.

    I felt everything again.

    And the craziest part?

Less than 24 hours earlier, I had released an episode about how simply showing up for another person can completely change their day.

Then somebody did exactly that for my family.

Saturday night didn't prove everything was fixed.

It proved something I really needed to know:

The feelings are still in there.

🎙️ Episode 6 — Bear Down: The Night I Felt Everything Again

Have you ever had something completely unexpected break through a rough stretch and remind you that you were still in there?

  • Life Is Hard. You Don't Have to Do it Alone
    2026/08/29

What if we’ve confused being strong with not needing anybody?

That idea hit me hard this week.

A complete stranger reached out after hearing what I’d been going through. He didn’t pretend to understand every part of it. He didn’t have some perfect piece of advice.

    He just showed up.

And that reminded me of something I’m still learning:

Life is hard. You don’t have to do it alone.

In Episode 5 of The Honest Middle, I talk about why asking for help doesn’t make us weak, how one honest conversation can create a chain reaction, and why sometimes the most powerful thing we can say to another person is simply:

“I hear you. I’ve got you. Keep going.”

One conversation can change a mood.

    It can change a relationship.

Hell, it might even change the direction of somebody’s life.

And if your words can help even one person?

    Keep talking. They’re listening.

  • The Clouds Came Back. The Progress Stayed.
    2026/08/21

Today was a good day — until the clouds came back.

Not as badly as before. Not enough to completely derail me. But enough to make that familiar question creep back in: Was all the progress I've been making actually real?

In Episode 4 of The Honest Middle, I talk about what happens when anxiety returns after you've finally started feeling better — and why one rough afternoon doesn't erase the days, weeks, or months of progress that came before it.

We talk about learning to ride the waves instead of being pulled under by them, refusing to let one small pebble stop the entire walk, leaning on the people around us, and learning to let a good day simply be a good day.

I'm still learning to trust the good days.

But I'm starting to trust something else even more:

One bad day doesn't get to take all the others away.

I'm John Knopick. This is The Honest Middle. We'll keep figuring it out together.
