The Holy Grail is often imagined as the cup used by Jesus at the Last Supper, later carried through secret hands into medieval legend. But the earliest surviving Grail story, Chrétien de Troyes's unfinished Perceval, does not clearly identify the object as that cup. It appears instead in a strange procession inside the castle of the wounded Fisher King, alongside a bleeding lance and other ritual objects. From that uncertain beginning, later writers connected the Grail to Joseph of Arimathea, Christ's blood, King Arthur's knights, Galahad, and the spiritual testing of the Round Table.

This episode follows the evidence in sequence: the Gospel record, the medieval romances, the Christian relic tradition, the Celtic and pre-Christian parallels, and the later claims surrounding the Knights Templar, the Priory of Sion, and the bloodline theory involving Jesus and Mary Magdalene. It also examines major physical candidates, including the Valencia Chalice, the Sacro Catino of Genoa, the Nanteos Cup, and the Antioch Chalice.

No surviving document proves a continuous first-century history for any claimed Grail. No accepted evidence establishes a marriage or bloodline of Jesus and Mary Magdalene. Yet the Grail remains difficult to reduce to one answer. Was it a lost sacred vessel, a Christian symbol, a medieval literary invention, an older myth reshaped by romance, or a modern container for hopes and conspiracies?
