Together they produce North Dakota’s largest fireworks display, and it all happens in a shop in Sawyer.Derrick Miller started Mum Pyrotechnics in 2008 with two friends. The first year they expected 200 people. Around 2,000 showed up. Sixteen years later they’re lighting up Minot’s Fourth of July with 1,200 individual firing points and effects nobody in North Dakota has ever seen before.Hailee Miller, 21, is the primary choreographer. She selects the music, designs every single shot, builds the shells herself, and then watches her vision light up the sky.
