  • Weh Yeoh - Good charities die young
    2023/12/12

    Send us a text

Weh Yeoh realised that there was so much more he could do with his Physiotherapy degree than hands on, 1 on 1 clinical work.

It was a combination of his physio training, clinical experience, and his travels (volunteering and working for charity overseas) that made him realise that the standard charity business model is broken.
If a charity grows, then it may not actually be doing the right job, and it might actually be harming the communities that it is supposedly serving.

Charities are so often more focussed on band aid solutions, rather than solving the problem that caused the issue in the first place, and get stuck in the funding "hamster wheel" with a constant need to justify their existence.

Instead of indefinite burden relief, if charities aimed to be the catalyst for change, involving 3rd parties like local government or the private sector, and set firm dates in the calendar for when they will hand over the work to locals ( in effect make themselves redundant) they can have a far greater, and more sustainable impact.

The concept of redundant charities is one which Weh firmly believes in, so much so, he has implemented it into his charity OIC Cambodia and written a whole book about it.
It's a challenging read, especially if you are inclined to donate to charity, or run a charity yourself.
    And that's why it's great.

It forces you to actually consider what makes a good cause, centred around 1 key question
When does the charity plan to leave?

This was a great chat, I really enjoyed the challenges, and I learnt a lot in the process.
    Enjoy!

  • Geraldine Hickey - The real stories beneath the comedy
    2023/11/30

    Geraldine Hickey makes me laugh,
which is good, because that's her job.
But it's the way she makes me laugh is what I like about her so much, through humorous anecdotes, and real stories about her life.

You see, you'll struggle to find a more genuine person, willing to share the vulnerable details of their world, in this case, through the medium of comedy.

    And it's not an act.
Our conversations on, and off the recording were by all accounts the same, with Geraldine, and her laid back approach, laughing at the mundane, and taking a genuine interest in the people she meets.

She is an ally for minorities, and a strong advocate for the queer community.
She talks about her own somewhat challenging past with sexuality, and wanting to help others.

I laughed a lot during this interview, but we also touched on some of the real stories that happen off stage.

Geraldine is a good egg. I think you'll love this one.

  • Louise Larkin - The friend you never knew you had
    2023/11/23

    Send us a text

While driving her car one day, Louise Larkin heard an interview on the radio that would change the course of her life.

She heard the sad story of a young boy, who was left broken hearted after no one turned up to his birthday party, despite his parents attempts at throwing a great party.

This lit a fire in her belly, and after some conversations with some friends, she decided to throw a birthday party for any child who was feeling left out, an all inclusive get together where kids could feel free to be themselves.

She expected 30-50 people, but 350 people turned up which was both surprising, and disheartening.

So, she threw more parties, and quickly realised that a large portion of the kids who were coming were unwell, or living with disability.

The calling was too strong, and Louise decided to commit to the cause full time, leaving her executive role, and ploughing headfirst into what was now aptly named "Friend In Me" a registered charity which now caters not only for kids and inclusion, but also for the parents of kids who require full time care.

In the podcast Louise talks about what drives her passion, who she is helping, and how she navigates the competitive landscape of charities and funding.

She has a big heart, and works really hard for the kids. This story will fill your bucket for sure.

    Enjoy
