Most of us want to help when someone is drowning in grief, but we accidentally say the very things that make them feel more alone. We slow down and get real about what comfort actually looks like when a friend is facing loss, betrayal, divorce, or the long ache that follows trauma. I anchor the conversation in 2 Corinthians 1:3–4, where God is called the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort, and where we’re reminded that comfort is meant to move through us, not stop with us.

We unpack why familiar lines like “They’re in a better place,” “Be strong,” “Everything happens for a reason,” and even “Let me know if you need anything” can minimize pain and put pressure on the grieving person. Then we look at the example that changes everything: Jesus at Lazarus’s tomb. Even knowing He was about to raise Lazarus, Jesus wept. He entered the sorrow first, showing us that presence is often more healing than advice.

From there, I share six practical ways to support someone who is hurting: show up and stay present, listen more than you speak, make room for lament, offer specific help without waiting to be asked, point to hope without forcing it, and keep showing up over time when the loneliness gets louder. If you want to know how to be a safe place for the brokenhearted with wisdom, patience, and real faith, this one is for you. Subscribe, share with someone who wants to help well, and leave a review so more people can find this comfort when they need it.
