• 359| Why Your Best Leaders Are Quietly Cracking (And What They Won't Tell You)
    2026/06/15

She ended the day at 4:45 with her real work still untouched. Got up. Went home. Came back and did it again.

If that landed anywhere, this episode was built for you.

I give a name to something a lot of leaders at your level are living right now and have not had the language for. And I give you two things you can do differently tomorrow.

    INSIDE THE EPISODE

Four questions worth sitting with honestly

Before I name it, I ask you to answer four things. Not in your head the way you do when you are half listening. Actually stop and answer them.

What quiet cracking is and what it is not

It is not burnout. It is not a character flaw. It is something more specific than either of those and more important to name.

What it looks like from the inside

The conversations that used to feel like culture now feel like a drain. The goals you were hired to move have not been touched in weeks. Not because you forgot. I name what is underneath that.

What becomes possible when it shifts

I paint the day you are building toward. It is not a fantasy. It is what gets addressed when you stop managing it at the surface.

Two things you can do tomorrow

Not a framework. Not a system overhaul. Two moves. Either one changes something.

    WHAT TO TAKE WITH YOU

    • There is a name for what you have been carrying. Hearing it does something that managing it never will.
    • The things we do not name, we manage. And managing something unnamed is exhausting in a way a long weekend does not fix.
    • You did not work your way to this level to spend it being everyone else's answer.

    SIT WITH THIS

When you think about the leader you are at your very best, the one with real vision, the one who makes decisions that hold, the one who walks in the room and leads. Does that version of you feel like someone you visit occasionally instead of someone you are?

  • 358| What AI Can't Give You That Your Leadership Requires
    2026/06/08

AI can give you a competent answer. It cannot give you your judgment. The leaders who are using AI well are not the ones replacing their read on the room with it. They are the ones who bring their judgment first and use AI as the tool after. That distinction is the difference between generic output and a decision that sounds like you.

    WHAT THIS EPISODE IS ABOUT

You are using AI and using it well. And you are still walking away from it feeling like something is missing.

That feeling has a name. And it is not a problem with the tool.

This episode is about what AI cannot replicate at your level, why it matters more right now than it ever has, and the one shift that changes everything you get back from it.

    INSIDE THE EPISODE

The gap you have already felt but not named

You have noticed it. I name it.

    Knowledge versus judgment

They are not the same thing. The difference is everything at your level.

The shortcut that is costing you

I share a personal example. You will recognize yourself in it.

What it looks like when you go in with your judgment first

This is the shift. And it changes what you get back.

What I am building with clients right now

AI that is actually trained on you. There is a difference between a tool and a tool that knows your wiring.

    WHAT TO TAKE WITH YOU

    • There is a name for what AI cannot give you. It is not a soft skill and it is not a mindset. Press play.
    • The shortcut feels efficient. I talk about what it is quietly costing you at your level.
    • The leaders who are using AI well are doing one thing differently before they ever open a prompt.

    SIT WITH THIS

When you go to AI for an answer, are you bringing your judgment with you, or are you waiting for AI to give you one?

  • 357| Why Does Everything Still Come Back to You? (And It's Not a Delegation Problem)
    2026/06/01

Your team is capable. You know that better than anyone. So when everything keeps routing back through you, the instinct is to look at them. More delegation. Better processes. Clearer expectations.

None of that is the real fix.

In this episode, I name the one thing your team is missing and why giving it to them changes every conversation after it.

    INSIDE THE EPISODE

    The signal most leaders misread

When your team keeps bringing things back to you, it is not about their capability. It is about information. I break down what that signal is actually telling you.

The story that changed how I see this

One leader. One meeting. A team that went from routing everything through her to running three steps ahead. Here is exactly what she did and what shifted.

The picture you are carrying that your team does not have

You have been in every closed-door meeting. You carry the full strategic context. Your team carries the task. That gap is where the routing lives, and it is smaller to close than you think.

What Monday looks like on the other side

I paint the inbox you actually want. The messages that come in when your team has what they need to trust their own read on the situation.

    WHAT TO TAKE WITH YOU

    • Your team is not coming back to you because they cannot handle it. They are coming back because they do not have what they need to trust their own judgment on the call.
    • The leaders who stop being the answer to everything are not better at delegating. They are better at sharing the picture.
    • The context your team is missing is probably already in your head. You just forgot they did not have it.

    SIT WITH THIS

What strategic context are you carrying in your head that your team does not have? Not because you are protecting it. Because it never occurred to you that they did not already have it, or that they needed it.

  • 356| I'm Not Different. My Choices Are. Memorial Day 2026
    2026/05/25

This one is personal. This is not a leadership framework episode. This is my story -- and I shared it because I think it belongs here.

Fifteen years of Memorial Days. Fifteen years of going back to DC with my kids. Walking the same halls. Watching new families walk in carrying that same fresh weight we carried the first time.

Someone asked me once how I am different from the families who have been coming for twenty-five years and are still standing in the same place emotionally. I told them -- I am not different. My choices are.

That is what this episode is about. Not the circumstances. What we do with them.

    WHAT WE COVER

I take you inside what it felt like to walk into that space for the first time -- surrounded by hundreds of people who did not need an explanation, who understood exactly what it meant to carry this specific kind of loss.

I talk about what fifteen years of that same trip looks like now -- how the grief has changed, how my family has changed, and what I see when I walk through those halls today that I could not see in the beginning.

And I share the five words I heard the day my world collapsed that I did not understand then -- but I do now.

SOMETHING I WANT YOU TO CARRY

You are not defined by what happened to you. You are shaped by what you chose to do after. Those are not the same thing -- and the difference between them is the whole story.

The circumstances are not a choice. What we do with them always is.

    Sit With This

Which hard are you carrying right now that was never yours to keep -- and which one is building something worth keeping?

  • 355| You Already Made the Decision. You Just Haven't Trusted It Yet.
    2026/05/18

You've run it through every filter. Looked at it from every angle. Sat with it at 3 am. The decision settled. And THEN you opened it back up.

Not because something changed. Because trusting your own read is harder than making the call in the first place.

In this episode, Tami opens a brand new series by naming what it actually costs when decisions don't hold -- and what becomes possible when they finally do. This one is personal. It starts with a story about a leader who built something from nothing, loved it, lost the love, and slowly found his way back. And it ends with the one question that changes what you do with next week.

    WHAT YOU'LL HEAR

Why the most exhausting part of leadership is rarely the decision itself. What it looks like when a leader keeps reopening something that already settled. The difference between a decision that was wrong and a decision that wasn't trusted. What changes when a leader finally lets a decision hold. Why this series exists and where it is going.

    LEADERSHIP PATTERN TO NOTICE

There is a specific kind of exhaustion that shows up in high-performing leaders who are excellent at what they do. It is not the exhaustion of overwork, though the hours are real. It is the exhaustion of making the same decision multiple times. The decision was made. It was right. And then new information came, or the weight of it got heavier, and it got reopened. Leaders who carry this pattern are not lacking confidence in the traditional sense. They are carrying a gap between knowing and trusting. The decision and the trust in it are not the same thing. Most leaders have never been told that.

    CONCEPTS INTRODUCED

This episode introduces the gap between a decision that settled and the trust required to let it hold. Tami also opens the new series, What You're Already Built For, and names the thread that will carry through the next several weeks: the wiring already in you that you have been second-guessing, editing, or waiting to fully own.

    SIT WITH THIS

What have you already decided that you keep reopening? Not because it was wrong. Because you haven't let yourself trust it yet.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • The decision wasn't the problem. The trust was.
    • When a decision doesn't hold, it doesn't disappear. It comes back with everything attached to it.
    • The leaders who get their footing back are not the ones who finally got more information. They are the ones who stopped second-guessing the information they already had.
    • Your body made that call before your brain finished building the case. That is not a flaw. That is wiring.
    • Letting a decision hold is not passivity. It is one of the highest-leverage moves a senior leader can make.

  • 354| Why Leadership Gets Harder the Higher You Go (And What Changes It)- Leadership Myth #6
    2026/05/11

Leadership gets harder at senior levels not because the role gets worse, but because the weight accumulates without a system for what to put down. Experience increases visibility and stakes but does not reduce the load. What changes it is understanding your own wiring — how you define responsibility, what you carry out of habit, and what was never yours to carry in the first place.

You have earned this seat. You know how to lead. And still, the weight of it follows you home.

Not because something is wrong. Because no one told you to put any of it down.

This is the final episode of the Leadership Myths series. Tami saved this one for last. Because this is the one every leader she has worked with has been carrying, and almost no one wants to say it out loud.

    What You'll Hear

    • What experience actually gives you at this level and what it does not
    • A real client story that changed how one VP understood what he was carrying
    • The difference between load-bearing weight and weight you picked up somewhere along the way
    • What becomes possible when that distinction finally becomes clear

    Leadership Pattern to Notice

There is a version of responsibility that was built for a different level of leadership. It served you then. At this level, it has a cost that most leaders can feel but have never fully named.

    Sit With This

What becomes possible when you stop carrying what was never yours?

    What's Coming Next

The Myths series is complete. Next week opens something different. Eight episodes. One question. What are you already built for?

Something I Don't Want You to Miss

The weight does not go away at this level. But there is a difference between the weight that belongs to the role and the weight you picked up somewhere along the way and forgot you were choosing to carry. That distinction changes everything.

A Leader's Purpose is a podcast for senior leaders and executives navigating the real pressure of high-stakes leadership. In this episode, Tami Imlay addresses why leadership gets harder the higher you go — the exhaustion that does not resolve with rest, the 3am decision replay, and the weight that follows you home even when everything is technically going well. This is the final episode of the Leadership Myths series, and it is the one she saved for last on purpose.

  • 353| You Are Not Lacking Confidence. You Are Performing It. Leadership Myth #5
    2026/05/04

The most capable leaders in the room are sometimes the most exhausted ones. Not because the role is too much — because they are performing something they already have.

Tami names the myth that keeps senior leaders working harder at looking certain while the gap between projected confidence and actual certainty quietly widens. She draws a line between performed confidence and calibrated certainty — two things that look identical from the outside and feel completely different from the inside.

This episode is not about building more confidence. It is about stopping the performance of the thing you already have and leading from the foundation that has been there all along.

    What You'll Hear

    • Why the most put-together leaders in the room are sometimes the most exhausted ones
    • A real client story that reframes what confidence at the highest level actually looks like
    • The distinction that changes how your team reads you — and follows you

    Leadership Pattern to Notice

The leaders who feel this most are the ones who look the most put together from the outside. They have learned how to hold a room. They know what composed looks like. And underneath that composure, there is a version of them working overtime that nobody sees. The performance is not a weakness. It is a response to a message that was never examined — that certainty is something you project rather than something you stand on.

    Key Takeaways

    • Performed confidence and calibrated certainty are not the same thing
    • Your team can feel the difference before you say a word
    • The foundation has been there. This is just where you get to stop performing it

    Concepts Introduced

Tami introduces the distinction between performed confidence and calibrated certainty — and makes the case that the performance itself is what erodes trust in the room, not the doubt underneath it. She also brings in the Enneagram 8 wiring as a diagnostic lens, naming the Sovereign leader type and the pattern of managing natural strength out of fear of how it lands. The through line: knowing your wiring is not self-awareness for its own sake. It is the foundation that makes calibrated certainty possible.

    Sit With This

Where are you performing certainty you already have — and what would it cost you to stop?

  • 352| Your Team Didn’t Disengage. They Withheld. Leadership Myth #4
    2026/04/27

Your team is not disengaged. They are responding. And there is a difference that changes everything about where you look.

Tami names the myth that keeps senior leaders investing in the wrong solutions — and reframes what is actually happening when the energy in the room goes flat, requests pile back up, and the people who started the year strong seem to have quietly shifted gears.

This is not a conversation about employee motivation. It is a conversation about signal. And once you understand the difference, you cannot unsee it.

    What You'll Hear

    • The experience most senior leaders are living but haven't been able to name
    • What the Gallup State of the Global Workplace data actually reveals about why 80 percent of the workforce is not fully engaged
    • A real story from client work — and the moment that proved this was never a disengagement problem
    • Five things employees actually need, and why none of them are motivation
    • What becomes possible when the signal changes

    Leadership Pattern to Notice

The leaders who feel this most are the ones who have already tried the team-side solutions. They ran the surveys. They brought in the speaker. They launched the culture initiative. And the energy still did not shift the way they expected. That is not failure. That is data. It means the starting point was off, not the effort.

    Key Takeaways

    • 80 percent of the global workforce is not engaged. That is not a motivation problem. That is a signal problem.
    • Engagement measures connection, not motivation. Connection to the work, the team, and how they are being led.
    • People do not stop caring. They stop investing energy in environments where what they need is not present.
    • What looks like disengagement is actually withheld energy. There is a difference.
    • When the signal changes, the team does not need a new initiative. They respond. Automatically.

    Concepts Introduced

Tami draws a distinction between disengagement and withheld energy — two things that look identical on the surface but point in completely different directions in terms of where a leader needs to look. She also introduces the idea of signal as a leadership variable: not what you say, not what you intend, but what your team is actually receiving and responding to. These are not frameworks. They are diagnostic lenses that shift how a leader reads the room.

    Sit With This

Where is the energy in your team telling you something you have not fully stopped to hear?
