They survive the monsters — only to face temptation disguised as rest.
In The Odyssey, Book 12, Odysseus and his remaining crew escape Scylla and Charybdis and soon sight the island of Helios Hyperion. From the sea, Odysseus hears the lowing of sacred cattle and remembers the strict warnings of Teiresias and Circe to avoid this place at all cost. He urges his men to sail past without landing. But exhaustion breaks their resolve. Eurylochus answers with bitter reason: night is falling, the winds are dangerous, and the men are spent. Better, he argues, to land briefly, eat, and sail at dawn than risk destruction in darkness.
This passage marks the most dangerous turn yet — where survival tempts disobedience, and the greatest threat is no longer monsters, but human need.
