Find the darkest thing in this cup. Blacker than the leaf, with a low shine to it, cut clean at both ends. Everything else in here is dry — the leaf crumbles, the bark snaps. This one doesn't crack. It gives. It's the fruit of an orchid, and it's the only orchid on earth whose fruit anybody eats. The flower opens for a single morning and is particular about who touches it, which is not a promising basis for a global industry. That it became one at all comes down to a few seconds' work, figured out in 1841 by a twelve-year-old boy.
