The Prodigal Son story is famous for the comeback, but the most life-changing part might be what the father does not do. He never chases his son into the far country. He stays home. He watches the road. And when his son finally turns back, the father is already moving, already running, already ready.
In this episode, I connect that overlooked detail in Luke 15 to something painfully real for spouses of addicts and families navigating addiction in marriage: codependency teaches us to chase, manage, and try to force an outcome. We convince ourselves that if we push hard enough, love hard enough, or explain ourselves well enough, we can make trust return on our timeline. But healing from codependency does not automatically restore what our old choices damaged — especially with our kids. If you've changed and someone you love still keeps their distance, that's not proof your transformation is fake. It's proof that trust rebuilds slowly.
We also talk about a middle way that's stronger than both extremes — chasing and giving up. You don't have to choose between the two. You can stop controlling while staying tender. You can respect someone else's freedom while never quitting on reconciliation, because reconciliation is ongoing work. If you're a codependent spouse carrying the ache of "watching the road," you are not alone, and you don't have to hold it all together by yourself.
If this helps you, subscribe, share it with a friend who needs hope, and leave a review so more partners and families impacted by addiction can find support. What does "watching the road" look like in your life right now?
