You have probably seen the glamorous version: a Hollywood producer, a fake movie, an Argo-style escape turned into a 2024 streaming series. This video covers the part that story leaves out. The murder charge that drove Huey P. Newton out of the country ended in a 1979 mistrial with the jury deadlocked ten to two for acquittal, and was then dismissed. Newton always said the charge was the endpoint of a federal operation. He spent the rest of his life proving it.
While in exile in Cuba, Newton stayed a graduate student at the University of California, Santa Cruz. In 1980 he earned a doctorate and titled his dissertation War Against the Panthers, a forensic reconstruction of the FBI's campaign against his own party, built from the government's own records. The man the FBI tried to erase became the historian of his own destruction.
This is the COINTELPRO record behind The Big Cigar. Bert Schneider, Gwen Fontaine, the 1967 John Frey case, the 1978 Preston Callins acquittal, J. Edgar Hoover, and the 233 operations the Church Committee later documented — the forensic version, not the caper.
