There is a thought you have been carrying.
Not just a worry. Not just a possibility.
Something that feels like a fact.
Not “I am worried I might fail.”
Just: “I am going to fail.”
In this episode of The Anxiety Toolkit, we explore cognitive defusion — a technique from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy that helps you create distance between yourself and the anxious story your mind keeps repeating.
The goal is not to argue with the thought. The goal is not to prove it wrong.
The goal is to notice it as a thought — not as reality.
In this episode, you will learn:
- What cognitive fusion is
- Why anxious thoughts can sometimes feel like facts
- How defusion helps create distance from difficult thoughts
- Why you do not have to argue with a thought to loosen its grip
- How to use the phrase “I notice I am having the thought that…”
- How to imagine a thought as text on a screen
- Why changing your relationship to a thought can reduce its power
Technique covered:
Cognitive defusion — the practice of observing a thought as a mental event instead of becoming fused with it as reality.
Key concepts covered:
Cognitive defusion, cognitive fusion, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, ACT skills, anxious thoughts, intrusive thoughts, thought distancing, mental events, observer perspective, anxious stories, thought loops, and practical anxiety management.
Practice prompt:
This week, every time a recurring anxious thought appears, add this phrase before it:
“I notice I am having the thought that…”
Then say the thought.
Do not argue with it. Do not evaluate whether it is true. Do not try to force it away.
Just prefix it.
That small sentence creates a little space between you and the thought. Over time, that space can change how the thought feels when it arrives.
Episode reminder:
The thought is not the problem. Being inside the thought without knowing it is the problem.
Defusion gives you perspective.
