In the winter of 2013, I stopped at the Deacon Hotel in Ely, Minnesota — a faded two-story with a neon vacancy sign that buzzed like a trapped fly. The front desk clerk was a woman named Margaret who didn't smile, didn't blink, and handed me a key to Room 237 with a warning: 'Don't open the connecting door.' I thought it was a joke. It wasn't a joke. By three in the morning, the knocking started — not at the hallway door, but at the thin wooden panel between my room and the one next door. What I found on the other side wasn't a room. It was a hallway that went on for miles, lined with identical doors, each one trembling. And Margaret's voice, from somewhere far down that corridor, said, 'You shouldn't have looked.' This is what I saw before I slammed the door and drove away into a snowstorm that didn't end until dawn. I still check connecting doors in every motel I stay in. I always will.
