  • The Lion King Roars
    2022/05/04

    Can you imagine being diagnosed with type one diabetes in the middle of an important show or event? In this episode, Kyle Banks shares his story of how he went from touring with The Lion King to living with type 1 diabetes using insulin injections. Kyle talks about the struggles he faced when starting to live with diabetes, and how Dexcom G6 helped him to better understand his blood sugar levels and manage his stress. He also discloses some tips for people living with diabetes on a budget, and how diet can play a role in managing the condition. His goal is to assist as many individuals and families as he can toward the road to better health and wellness.

     Kyle is an actor, vocalist, and all-around music enthusiast. Having logged stage time professionally on and off-Broadway, Kyle has also aided behind the scenes as a music business development and strategy consultant for Sony Music Entertainment, Wynn Las Vegas, and Hard Rock gaming casinos. Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 2015 while performing with Disney’s musical production of The Lion King, Kyle began working closely with the endocrinology team at Children’s Hospital in New Orleans, where he currently serves as a mentor for a host of kids receiving care. Through his connection with Children’s Hospital, Kyle discovered the challenges that many individuals of color face when attempting to access the latest diabetic technology available for glucose control. In response, Kyle founded the Kyler Cares Foundation, which provides grants for insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors, and diabetic education resources for kids and young adults living with this chronic disease.

    As a person who has been diagnosed with type one diabetes, are you really aware of the real challenges that you face, as opposed to the challenges that you brushed under the rug or exaggerate? Our today’s guest, Dr. Mark Heyman, will show us how we can leave with action,  change our mindset to become much more free and flexible, and do what we want regardless of the stress and anxiety we experience.

    Dr. Mark Heyman is a diabetes psychologist and a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist. He is the CEO of the Center for Diabetes & Mental Health (CDMH) in San Diego. He is passionate about providing diabetes education and evidence-based mental health treatment and online programs to people with diabetes. Mark received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from The George Washington University and completed his psychology internship at the UCSD School of Medicine. He is the host of The Diabetes Psychologist Podcast and the author of Diabetes Sucks and You Can Handle It: Your Guide to Managing the Emotional Challenges of T1D.

    Today’s awesome guest known for her many distinctions is Angella White, MS-DEDM, RN, CDCES. For today’s episode, we will be talking about her program called PEEPS for people diagnosed with Diabetes. Angella’s astounding educational background is backed-up by her sister’s life and her personal journey.

    Here’s more about Angella:

    Angella is originally from Jamaica, where she began her career in nutrition to focus on how various foods impact health. She had experienced the tragic loss of her sister to diabetes and wanted to study how diet affected the disorder. After moving to the US, Angella taught restaurant occupations for Riverside School District and later partnered with her cousin to open the award-winning restaurant "Tropical Grill" in Corona, California. Over the years, Angella's passion for food transitioned her experience from restaurant owner to Diabetes Educator; she gave up the restaurant and teaching to begin her career in nursing and fulfill her aspiration of becoming a diabetes educator.

    Angella is now board-certified diabetes care and education specialist (CDCES) and has completed a Master of Science in Diabetes Education and Management (MS-DEDM) at Teachers College, Columbia University. In addition, she has almost ten years of experience in the Native American community, where she was passionate about teaching people how to live well with diabetes. As a result, she founded the PEEPS™ (Peers Educating, Empowering, and Providing Support) online diabetes education and certification program (https://bemypeeps.org). PEEPS™ is a learning platform where just about anyone can become a Certified Diabetes Peer Educator with the ability to help themselves, their loved ones, and their community to live well with diabetes.
