• Effort Can Be Learned — And So Can Helplessness (Part 2 of 5)
    2026/07/16

The strangest finding in the motivation literature: effort itself can become rewarding. Jonathan Doyle unpacks Eisenberger's learned industriousness studies — "high effort produces a generalized tendency to exert high effort; effort itself acquires secondary reward value" — via David Goggins and the double dip at the dopamine pool. Then the mirror: helplessness is learned the same way, which means the "lazy" person is often running an accurate software model of a history where effort never paid. The fix: small wins, stacked, until the model updates.

"Every small win is re-teaching your brain that pushing works."

  • Pursue Passion, Not Safety — The Life You’re Afraid to Build
    2026/06/30

This one’s personal. Jonathan Doyle tells the story of his father — a man who spent a lifetime doing work he hated, a gentle artistic soul buried doing someone else’s story — and makes the case, with Robert Greene’s Mastery and a line from Helen Keller, that betting on your passion is, over a lifetime, the safer bet. Not a licence to be reckless; an invitation to stop sleepwalking through the one life you’re given.

“When you come alive, you give permission to everybody else around you to wake up as well.”

  • Discipline Is Freedom — The Lie That Indulgence Sets You Free
    2026/07/01

We’re sold the idea that freedom means indulging every appetite. Jonathan Doyle argues the reverse — that the undisciplined life quietly costs you your energy, your self-regard, and your potential, and that real freedom is found on the far side of saying no. Drawn entirely from what he’s living right now, including the small daily promptings that discipline keeps him awake enough to notice.

“You cannot say a full-throated yes to reality if you cannot say a no.”

  • It Doesn’t Matter Enough to You (Yet) — The Uncomfortable Truth About Why You’re Stuck
    2026/07/05

You know exactly what you should be doing — so why aren’t you doing it?

Jonathan Doyle shares the uncomfortable truth he gives the executives he coaches: if you’re not acting, it’s because it doesn’t matter enough to you yet. Drawing on a coaching conversation from this week, a friend’s heroic witness, Thoreau’s “quiet desperation,” and the one question that cuts through everything: what would you genuinely sacrifice for?

“What will happen to you if this never changes?”

  • Stop Caring What Others Think — Their Opinion Is None of Your Business
    2026/07/04

We spend years managing an audience that mostly isn’t even watching. Jonathan Doyle makes the freeing case that most people aren’t thinking about you at all — and that the only opinions worth carrying are God’s, your family’s, and your own. Not a licence to be obnoxious; an invitation to stop shrinking and bring your own unique magic into the world, the way a five-year-old in a Superman costume once did.

“You don’t have to impress them. You just have to impress yourself. Just impress yourself.”

  • Do Uncommon Things — We Become What We Repeatedly Do
    2026/07/02

An entrepreneur told Jonathan Doyle the one thing he knew for certain: “I don’t want to be average.” The answer turned out to be ancient — Aristotle’s idea that we become what we repeatedly do — and devastatingly simple. List what the average person does, and stop doing it; then start building a bank account of uncommon things, like a minus-three-degree run at 4:30 in the morning.

“If you want uncommon results, you have to do uncommon things.”

  • What Do You Want — and Why Does It Matter? The 3-Step Way Out of Complaining
    2026/07/03

Once you decide to stop complaining, what do you actually do with your problems? Jonathan Doyle lays out a simple three-step strategy he teaches the executives and entrepreneurs he coaches: get clear on what you actually want, get honest about why it matters, and let the action follow — because in the age of the internet, the strategy is never the hard part.

“What do I really want, and why does it matter? And then you’ll find a strategy.”

    2026/07/06

From this day forward: start betting on you. Jonathan Doyle on the years we waste looking backwards in shame, guilt and regret — and the moment everything changes: when you finally get on your own team. Featuring the story of a man on Instagram who, from a wheelchair and with a voice that struggles, bets on himself every single day. If he can, what’s your excuse?

“If you can’t bet on yourself, who’s gonna bet on you?”
