- At 7:20 a.m. on August 9, 1954, birdwatcher Gina Sharp nearly stepped on an upright glass of sweet tea in the gravel outside Room Six.
- Todd Murphy, 28, was found face-down on the floor inside Room Six and had been dead for hours when discovered.
- Murphy had checked in the previous evening, August 8, signing the register as Thomas Murphy and paying $3.50 in cash for two nights.
- A fresh deep lateral gouge and a spin mark were found on the unpaved east access road behind the Sundowner, with a playing-card-sized dark oily stain at the center.
- The straight-sided eight-ounce tumbler matched stock from the Millwheel Diner located two hundred yards north on Route 41.
