  • The Clutch Mode Podcast Episode 13- Pats/Colt Joint Practice and Preseason Game 1
    2026/08/15

We start with the Week in Review, going league by league with the latest news from the Patriots and the rest of the NFL, the Celtics and NBA, the Red Sox and MLB, plus updates from around New England sports and the biggest national stories worth talking about.

Then we get into the Patriots Season Ticket Member Practice from today. We break down what stood out, the players who made an impression, what we saw from the offense and defense, and the biggest takeaways as training camp continues.

From there, it’s time for The One Question: What Did We Learn From the Joint Practices and Preseason Game 1? After getting a chance to work against the Colts in joint practices and then seeing New England take the field for its first preseason game, we look at what actually carried over. We talk quarterback play, the offense, offensive-line depth, the running backs, receivers and tight ends, the defense, roster battles and which questions are starting to get answers heading deeper into the preseason.

Next up is The 101, where we continue breaking down NFL offense with Pass Protection 101. We explain five-, six- and seven-man protection, man vs. slide protection, half-slide concepts, how running backs and tight ends help protect the quarterback, what happens when the defense brings more rushers than the offense can block, and why every sack or free rusher isn’t automatically the offensive line’s fault.

And finally, in Final Freeform, we look ahead to a trip we’ve been excited about: heading to Polar Park to see the Worcester Red Sox in person!

  • The Clutch Mode Podcast - Boston College Football Preview Special featuring AJ Black
    2026/08/04

The Clutch Mode Podcast is back with a Boston College Football Preview Special featuring AJ Black.

We start by looking back at how BC went from 7-6 in Bill O’Brien’s first season to 2-10 in 2025. What went wrong, and how much of it falls on O’Brien? We get into the quarterback situation, the lack of a consistent running game, the offensive-line issues, and a defense that struggled to stop the run, create pressure, and force turnovers.

From there, we break down the massive roster turnover. BC lost 29 players to the transfer portal and several key veterans to the NFL, then responded by adding 23 high school recruits and 26 transfers. What does that kind of turnover say about the state of the program? Did BC bring in the right players, and which newcomers and returning players should fans be watching this season?

We take a look at new starting quarterback Mason McKenzie. Why did O’Brien choose the former Saginaw Valley State quarterback to lead the offense? We look at his Division II production, how his dual-threat game could translate to the ACC, where he will need to adjust, and what BC needs to put around him for the offense to work. That includes Evan Dickens and Nolan Ray in the backfield, and Reed Swanson as a receiving option, and a rebuilt offensive line.

On defense, we talk about new coordinator Ted Roof, how his style should differ from Tim Lewis, whether BC has the right personnel for his system, and what has to improve after a season in which the Eagles allowed 177.6 rushing yards per game and finished with only 17 sacks.

We also discuss the addition of general manager Kenyatta Watson, BC’s increased revenue-sharing commitment, the role of Friends of the Heights, and whether the program is finally doing enough to compete in today’s college football landscape.

Finally, we look at BC being picked 16th in the ACC, the biggest games on the 2026 schedule, and what Bill O’Brien needs to do to keep his job. We close with a conversation about Father Leahy’s impact on BC Athletics, what Father Jack Butler needs to change, and what it will take for Boston College to get back to competing for ACC championships and national relevance.
