He knew who you were sleeping with.
He knew what you owed the bank.
He knew when you'd be home, and he wrote to tell you so.

For nearly two decades, a small farming town in the heart of Ohio received thousands of anonymous letters exposing affairs, debts, and secrets no outsider should have known. It began in 1976 with a single note accusing a school bus driver of infidelity. It escalated into a fatal car crash, a gun rigged to fire from a roadside sign, and a conviction that many still believe was wrong. The town was Circleville, Ohio, population barely ten thousand, a place first laid out in perfect concentric circles around an ancient earthwork mound, and later squared into an ordinary grid, as though the town itself had once tried to erase its own strange shape. No one ever saw the Writer coming.

Between 1976 and the mid 1990s, the Circleville letters targeted teachers, farmers, police officers, and even children, nearly all postmarked from Columbus, all typed with the same distinctive hand. A man was arrested. A man was convicted. And still, the letters kept arriving, some addressed to the very prison cell where the accused sat locked away. Tonight, we walk the streets of Circleville, Ohio, and trace one of the coldest, cruelest poison pen campaigns in American history, a case where the evidence points in every direction at once, and the real Writer may have simply stopped, and gone quiet, and kept living among the very people they tormented.

Tonight, your host Sierra Sterling breaks down the case files, timeline, and unresolved forensic evidence behind The Circleville Writer, from the first threatening note in 1976 to the booby-trapped sign of February 1983, the trial that followed, and the decades-long question of whether the wrong person ever paid for it.

Keep the doors locked. Keep the volume low. Tonight's file, is open.
