  • Ella Clayton
    2026/05/01

Today Sue and Nick are joined in the Chatterbox studio by Ella Clayton.

ELLA CLAYTON is a singer/songwriter from London whose breathtaking voice and storytelling ability casts powerful spells over each audience she encounters. She released her first LP, ‘Murmurations’, at the end of 2022.

With her second studio album ‘Could It Be You?’ due to be released 24th April, East London singer-songwriter Ella Clayton spotlights lead single ‘As You Are’ a love song of a different kind. Recorded at George Ezra’s studio Hotel Quebec, the closing track ‘As You Are’ is a sunny lead single, containing a big crescendo with an extended finale. It is a rare love song about friendship, sparked by a mundane moment of spotting a close friend haggling for jeans at a market stall, unaware she was being watched. A warm nod to how platonic love is worth celebrating just as loudly as the romantic one.

Blending soulful folk storytelling with emotional honesty, Ella continues to enchant audiences with her mesmeric vocals and relatable lyrics. The new record (out 24th April) transforms uncertainty into revelation with 11 songs mapping out modern love, loneliness and the quiet process of getting to know yourself, offering listeners both solace and self-recognition.

Along with producer Lester Duval (Pip Millet, Alfa Mist) Ella wanted this record to feel like a warm hug and to sound like musicians playing together in the same room. With George Ezra kindly offering up his Hotel Quebec studio for three days, they were able to track the rhythm section for all songs live. The result is a piece of work that captures the raw immediacy of Ella’s beloved live-stage sound, while making space for lush and cinematic moments throughout. Genre-bending, her unique voice is the thread that weaves throughout.

BIO: Ella Clayton is a soulful, folk singer-songwriter born and raised in East London. She released her debut album Murmurations in 2022, a deeply personal collection of songs that established her as a rising voice in the UK’s indie-folk scene. The record was followed in 2023 by Stairwell, a stripped-back acoustic EP recorded in a three-story stairwell, capturing the raw intimacy of her live sound. Her past releases have been met with critical acclaim from titles such as The Independent, Rough Trade and God Is In The TV, and her song ‘Only Bodies’ was featured in the BAFTA-winning film Sweetheart, as well as Netflix’s interactive series Dead Man’s Phone.

She has headlined venues like The Lower Third, St Pancras Old Church, Green Note and The Waiting Room in London, with festival highlights including Latitude (on a stage personally curated by George Ezra), With her second album due for release, Ella has already started work on her third album with new producers Matt Cooke and Michael Hemmings (Edie Bens). With exciting tour dates to be soon announced, her album launch show has been confirmed to take place at Soho’ 100 Club at 100 Oxford Street.

  • Chaz Jankel of the Blockheads
    2026/04/27

Our guest on this edition of the Chatterbox Redux Podcast is Chaz Jankel, original member of The Blockheads

Originally released in 1988, Chaz Jankel’s score for the movie D.O.A. has been unavailable for 25 years. Now, after countless requests, it is here, reimagined, and remastered.

Chaz Jankel is an English musician and songwriter. In a career spanning more than 40 years, he came to prominence in the late 1970s as the guitarist and keyboardist of Ian Dury and the Blockheads. With Dury, Jankel co-wrote some of the band’s best-known songs including Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll, Reasons to Be Cheerful Part 3 and Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick which featured at No.18 on the Greatest Ever British No.1’s in The Guardian.

He also wrote Ai No Corrida that became a big hit for the late Quincy Jones, and Glad To Know You, from his second solo album Chasanova, was a massive dance hit in the USA, staying at No.1 in the Billboard Hot 100 Chart for some 6 weeks.

Chaz has also written a number of film scores including An Unusual Job for a Woman, War Party, Killing Dad, K2, Rachel Papers and D.O.A. that his sister Annabel co-directed. His score for the Dury biopic Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll was nominated for a BAFTA.

D.O.A. was released in 1988 and the score was briefly available on Varese Sarabande on CD, but for the last 25 years one couldn’t find it anywhere. It was Chaz’s wife Elaine, who loved the original score, that suggested reimagining, remastering, and rereleasing the score. D.O.A. Reimagined is now available through Kudos Records and can be found online.

There are seven pieces on the album. Dead on Arrival Suite (Radio Edit) is the original orchestral score presented as a suite and Dead on Arrival (Piano Sonata) is a brand-new interpretation of the theme.

Other previous projects include a jazz quartet instrumental album called Out of the Blue (2001), a solo album with featured singers called The Submarine Has Surfaced (2011), and another solo album Flow (2023). There is a new instrumental album called Notes of Bergamot due to be released this spring which is a collaboration with acclaimed cellist Frank Schaeffer. In addition to this he has another jazz collaboration with saxophonist/flautist Finn Peters due for release later this year.

Meanwhile, Chaz continues to play throughout the country to enthusiastic Blockhead fans and has new material with the band ready to be released.

  • Andi Jane (2nd interview)
    2026/04/22

In this edition, awesome country / honky-tonk singer-songwriter Andi Jane re-joins Sue and Nick in the Chatterbox studio for her second interview

Here she discusses the tracks on her new album "The Ground Is Changing", on her website, Andi says; "This album is a love story, but not the fairytale kind. The cataclysmic kind that shakes you to your core and changes you forever. The kind that ends in songs rather than promises.

For the ground is changing, right under our feet. The trees can fall, and the water can take the island right from me. The meadow might burn… But honey, don’t yearn for the way it used to be. "

Andi Jane grew up on a homestead at the end of a dirt road in small-town central Illinois, where singing and imagination ruled her world. After moving to Chicago, she formed a dance-rock band and later became a DJ, chasing sound and energy before eventually finding her way back to signwriting. It wasn’t until she moved to Nashville eight years ago that she wrote her first Americana song—and suddenly realized she had come home.

Raised on ’90s country and the cassette tapes of Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn, those early roots ran deep, as adulthood brought new music that blurred the lines between genres in her writing. She started calling the result the Honky-Tonk Cabaret: a style rooted in storytelling and drama, where bluegrass meets theatre and country brushes up against jazz.

Her debut album, The Ground is Changing, leans bluegrass in spirit—banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and upright bass at its core—while bending tradition with washboard, drums, and blues-soaked dobro. The philosophical heart of the album lives in its title track, “Teardrop Island,” co-written with Craig Anderson—the other half of the album’s central love story. The song reflects on the idea that the ground beneath us is always changing, and that growth comes not from resisting that movement, but from learning to evolve with it. This sentiment shapes the entire record: heartbreak is not the end point, but a catalyst for self-knowledge, creativity, and redirection.

While the love story anchors the album, The Ground Is Changing widens its lens at key moments. “Thousand Little Lies” tells a cinematic tale of a charismatic conwoman who lures her victims with promises of love, while “Running Out of Time” plays with urgency and modern anxiety through sharp wordplay and restless momentum. Together, these songs reinforce the album’s central truth—change is inevitable, and clarity comes from facing it honestly.

Andi Jane’s music lives in the space between nostalgia and reinvention, where tradition is honoured but never mistaken for a boundary. Through vivid song-writing and an unmistakably expressive voice, she draws listeners into a world that is playful, dramatic, and deeply human — where heartbreak, humour, and transformation are all part of the same story.

  • Joe Hermes (3rd Interview)
    2026/04/13

Joe Hermes joins Chatterbox for the third time to chat about his new European and UK tour, and his new single Boots on Broadway which is released in both Country and Rock versions.

Joe Hermes (h•e•r•m•i•s•s), one of the hottest new acts in the Rock Country scene, is a bonafide ‘battle-tested’ entertainer. Dedicated to his pursuit and driven by his commitment to his faith, family, and belief in working for the American Dream, the Illinois native beams with pride he stands behind.

The good-hearted, fun-loving former defensive lineman packs a big punch with edgy vocal textures and hard-hitting musical storylines (both intimate and boldly straight-up) that sift between the angel and devil as a stand-out signature. His raucous sound and high-energy stage performances (self-described as “gunpowder country”) originate from his earliest influences (Metallica, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Aerosmith, Pantera and Bon Jovi). Hermes strings together intense, soulful vocals, with raw, honest lyrics and his “Heart of Illinois” roots sound to rev a captivating listening experience.

With the encouragement and lending hand of renowned music producer Buddy Hyatt (TOTO, George Jones, Lee Greenwood, Mickey Gilley, Tracy Lawrence), Joe recorded the EP titled SOULS WITH STONES to make his official introduction in 2020. Unintimidated by the adversity and challenges of both the music industry and the COVID shutdown, Hermes pointed his concentration toward songwriting working alongside Grammy-award-winning songwriter/producer/manager Dale Oliver. In 2023, Joe released his full-length CD, ROCKIN’ A COUNTRY TOWN co-produced with Oliver behind the board. The project spotlights, original tunes penned alongside Oliver, Dan Couch (Kip Moore/Cody Johnson), and Big Vinny Hickerson (of the trio Trailor Choir) including “Stronger Than Whiskey'' and “Used To Be Me” which landed at No. 46 on the MusicRow Country Breakout Chart. In 2024, Joe released the singles “Baptized By The South” (March 2024) and “Walk Away Whiskey” (June 2024) and rolled out his Double-shot Waterfall Series (spotlighting "Hey Son," "Outlaw's Gospel," "Devil's In The Details," "Black Label Country," "American Muscle" and "Outgun The Outlaw").

Reinforcing his conviction, dedication, and talents, Hermes garnered early welcome and support from country radio, country music fans, and his peers. In three short years, he’s shared the stage with some of the biggest names in country music entertainment [including David Nail, Ward Davis, Craig Campbell, Kolby Cooper, Myron Elkins, and Kinsey Rose (The Voice) among others]. Establishing a foothold in the Rock ‘n Roll arena, Hermes has opened for Uncle Kracker, Black Stone Cherry, Head East, Hinder, Jackyl and Lita Ford.

“I’m trying to write songs to catalogue my life and my experiences, and to inspire my future. I’m not afraid to look back at addiction, and the evils of this world, to turn around and share an inspirational spin from my perspective. God willing, I can look back to remember where I was, how I got there, and how I got through it–because of my music.” Joe Hermes
