The Book of Jubilees, also called Lesser Genesis or the Book of the Division of the Days, is an ancient Jewish rewriting of Genesis and the opening of Exodus. It presents Moses on Mount Sinai receiving not only commandments, but a complete angelic history dictated from heavenly tablets. Creation, the flood, the Watchers, Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Passover, and Israel’s future are arranged by weeks of years and jubilees, with laws and festivals placed inside the structure of creation itself. Probably composed in Hebrew during the Second Temple period, often dated by scholars to the second century before the common era, Jubilees became important in some Jewish circles. Fragments representing multiple Hebrew copies were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, while its complete text survived principally in Geʽez and remains canonical in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo tradition.
