Title: David Allied with the Philistines - Lesson from Sunday October 6, 2024
Introduction: First Timothy teaches us to “Study to show ourselves approved unto God” so that we can be “workmen that don’t need to be ashamed”. 1 Samuel 28 presents a classic example of why this principle is so important for the believer. One needs to study inorder to find out why Saul is in such great turmoil. One needs to study to understand exactly what is happening in the chapter. One needs to study in order to see if and how these things apply to the believer in the church age. So, let us begin our study.
Jesus said that Satan is a liar and the father of lying -Jn. 8:44. The truth is not in him. Satan builds his kingdom on deception. Therefore, it follows that the greatest weapon against Satan's kingdom is truth that exposes his lies.
The second chapter of the book of Hebrews reminds us that we hold a lower state than the angels. They operate in a higher estate. One that we do not fully comprehend. One that often breeds curiosity and mystery within the human mind. Such fascination can and is also dangerous. One may be deceived into believing that they have a handle or some special power within the realm. However, this perception is always based on deception and is always a trap.
So, is the believer exempt from such powers? Can the believer be deceived and then destroyed? If so, how does this happen? It is my contention the believer is susceptible and vulnerable. I am teaching that the book of 1 Samuel teaches this in the life of Saul.
I am teaching this from the standpoint that while the believer can be destroyed, I am not suggesting that one’s eternal security in Christ is lost.
Conclusion: Behold, I send you forth as sheep amongst wolves: be ye therefore, wise as serpents and harmless as doves. Matthew 10:16
The believer should be wise in matters of the occult. First, be wise enough to not dismiss the power and presence that the occult has in this age. Secondly, be wise enough to rely upon God who is all powerful over the occult and able to restrain those powers at will in protecting His children. Lastly, Be wise enough to heed the scriptures and have NOTHING to do with the powers of darkness. Satan is a cunning deceiver with tens of thousands of years of experience. You and I are no match for him. If we open our minds to him in the slightest way, Satan is ready and willing to move in and begin his work of destruction. Remember, He walks about as a roaring lion seeking to steal, to kill and to destroy. Christians are not exempt.
