Title: Dealing with Rejection - Lesson from Sunday October 20, 2024

Introduction: To feel unwanted, unneeded and unnecessary will bring any of us to our lowest estate. Rejection has a way of wearing on an individual. What one does in the midst of rejection is paramount as to how and if one will survive rejection.

Chapter 29 reveals how David dealt with rejection. Considering all of David’s recent failures; at least when he reaches his lowest point of rejection and David responds correctly. As a result, David not only survives rejection; in a very sense, David thrives in the midst of his rejection. He emerges victorious. Conclusion: Behold, I send you forth as sheep amongst wolves: be ye therefore, wise as serpents and harmless as doves. Matthew 10:16

Title: David Allied with the Philistines - Lesson from Sunday October 6, 2024

Introduction: First Timothy teaches us to “Study to show ourselves approved unto God” so that we can be “workmen that don’t need to be ashamed”. 1 Samuel 28 presents a classic example of why this principle is so important for the believer. One needs to study inorder to find out why Saul is in such great turmoil. One needs to study to understand exactly what is happening in the chapter. One needs to study in order to see if and how these things apply to the believer in the church age. So, let us begin our study.

Jesus said that Satan is a liar and the father of lying -Jn. 8:44. The truth is not in him. Satan builds his kingdom on deception. Therefore, it follows that the greatest weapon against Satan's kingdom is truth that exposes his lies.

The second chapter of the book of Hebrews reminds us that we hold a lower state than the angels. They operate in a higher estate. One that we do not fully comprehend. One that often breeds curiosity and mystery within the human mind. Such fascination can and is also dangerous. One may be deceived into believing that they have a handle or some special power within the realm. However, this perception is always based on deception and is always a trap.

So, is the believer exempt from such powers? Can the believer be deceived and then destroyed? If so, how does this happen? It is my contention the believer is susceptible and vulnerable. I am teaching that the book of 1 Samuel teaches this in the life of Saul.

I am teaching this from the standpoint that while the believer can be destroyed, I am not suggesting that one’s eternal security in Christ is lost.

Conclusion: Behold, I send you forth as sheep amongst wolves: be ye therefore, wise as serpents and harmless as doves. Matthew 10:16

The believer should be wise in matters of the occult. First, be wise enough to not dismiss the power and presence that the occult has in this age. Secondly, be wise enough to rely upon God who is all powerful over the occult and able to restrain those powers at will in protecting His children. Lastly, Be wise enough to heed the scriptures and have NOTHING to do with the powers of darkness. Satan is a cunning deceiver with tens of thousands of years of experience. You and I are no match for him. If we open our minds to him in the slightest way, Satan is ready and willing to move in and begin his work of destruction. Remember, He walks about as a roaring lion seeking to steal, to kill and to destroy. Christians are not exempt.

Title: Nabal & Abigail - Lesson from Sunday September 29, 2024

Introduction: “Marley was dead”. Thus began that great Dickens novel, A Chrisrtmas Carol. Similarly, 1 Samuel 25 begins “Now Samuel died.”

This statement accomplishes several things for the reader. First, it acts as sort of a time stamp. With ancient records this information allows historians to better date the book for us. Secondly, it marks the end of an era in Israel. Samuel represents the final judge in Israel. Finally, his death and funeral seem to provide a small respite for David as Saul takes a short time, along with the rest of the nation to mourn. It is not clear whether or not David was able to attend and also mourn the loss of Israel’s final judge/priest.

The outline for this lesson covering 1 Samuel chapters 25 & 26:

    • David and Saul separated at the end of Chapter 24.
    • Consider the characters of Chapter 25
    • David receives word that Nabal is shearing his sheep
    • Nabal returns insults rather than rewards
    • David is insulted, infuriated & impulsive
    • Abigail intervenes
    • David married Abigail & Jezreel
    • David spares Saul again

Title: Temptation & Opportunity - Lesson from Sunday September 22, 2024

Introduction: “There you go again” -Ronald Reagan when debating Jimmy Carter in 1980 quipped as Carter once again accused and misquoted Reagan. David probably thought something similar of Saul. Saul seems unable to stop himself from pursuing David who holds no malice or ill will towards Saul. Chapter 24 is the continuation of this tragic and tiring tale.

The outline for this lesson covering 1 Samuel chapter 24:

    • Saul’s misguided priorities
    • Mighty men see opportunity
    • David’s mature faith
    • David’s plea to Saul
    • Saul answers David

Conclusion: Having heard Saul’s reply to Daivd one would assume that this is the end to the story. Or at least one could assume that Saul had finally come to his senses and would no longer pursue David. However, chapter 24 seems to be nothing more than a moment of clarity for Saul. Before long, Saul will be back to his old tricks again and David will continue to run and hide in self preservation.

Psychology might label such behavior as bipolar or some other disorder. Sadly, this pattern is often seen in the life of a believer that is in rebellion. 1 Sam 15:23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft (divination) . . .

Divination is surrendering one’s mind to evil spirits. This can take on many forms but make no mistake; rebellion is one of those forms.

Satan is a liar and the father of all lies. He deals in deception and toys with the mind. The believer must remain on guard against this and seek God’s word, HIs work and His will. We are no match for Satan when we are away from God’s protection.
