  • Who Should Hold Back the Flood?

    Flooding has always been part of Britain’s landscape, but the way we manage it is changing. In this episode of The Bit Outside, Richard Villar asks a deceptively simple question - who should hold back the flood?The episode begins in a traditional hay meadow. It is a familiar upland scene, with grasses moving in the breeze, wildflowers scattered through the field, bees working steadily from flower to flower and a curlew calling overhead. Yet this meadow may have another future. It could become part of a flood-storage scheme, deliberately allowed to hold water during periods of heavy rainfall in order to protect communities many miles downstream.At first sight, the idea seems logical. Flooding is becoming an increasingly serious problem. More than six million homes and businesses in England are now at risk from flooding, and climate change is increasing the likelihood of intense rainfall. A warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture, meaning that when conditions are right, more water may fall in a shorter period of time.Yet climate change is only part of the story.For generations, we have changed the way water moves through the countryside. Rivers have been straightened. Wetlands have been drained. Floodplains have been developed. Agricultural soils have sometimes become compacted. Roads, rooftops and car parks now cover ground that once absorbed rainfall. Each individual change may have seemed reasonable at the time, but together they have altered the hydrology of entire catchments.Rain that once soaked slowly into woodland, grassland or peat can now reach rivers far more quickly. The result is faster runoff, higher flood peaks and greater pressure on communities downstream.One of the central ideas explored in this episode is that every flood has an upstream story.Water falling on a distant hillside may ultimately determine whether a family many kilometres away remains dry or is forced to evacuate. That changes the way we should think about flooding. Rather than asking only how to defend a town or village, we must also ask how the whole catchment behaves.Healthy soils matter. Woodland matters. Peatlands matter. Wetlands matter. Even longer grass in gardens, parks and roadside verges can make a small contribution by intercepting rainfall and allowing more water to infiltrate the ground.This broader approach is known as Natural Flood Management, or NFM.The name may sound modern, but much of the principle is simply about restoring some of the functions that landscapes once performed naturally. Rivers can be allowed to meander again. Wetlands can be restored. Damaged peatlands can be repaired. Woodland can be planted in carefully chosen places. Soils can be managed to improve infiltration. Leaky woody dams can slow the movement of water through small streams. Even beavers can play a role by creating wetlands and temporarily storing water behind their dams.None of these measures is a miracle solution. Their strength lies in combination.The aim is simple: slow water, store it and release it more gradually.For much of the last two centuries, however, Britain followed a different philosophy. Rivers were straightened, embanked and confined. The goal was to move water away from vulnerable places as quickly as possible. Traditional engineering still has a vital role. Flood walls, pumping stations, reservoirs, embankments and major barriers such as the Thames Barrier protect huge numbers of people.The problem is not engineering itself. It is the assumption that any one technique can solve every flood problem.A flood wall may protect a town but do little against surface-water flooding. Woodland can slow runoff but cannot prevent every extreme storm. Leaky dams may help small streams but will not control a major river. Natural Flood Management is valuable, but it is not a universal answer.The strongest approach is likely to combine natural processes with conventional engineering, tailored to the needs of each individual catchment.From a purely hydraulic point of view, a hay meadow can be extremely useful. One hectare flooded to a depth of thirty centimetres can temporarily hold around three million litres of water, roughly one and a quarter Olympic swimming pools. To an engineer trying to reduce a downstream flood peak, that is an attractive proposition.Traditional hay meadows are among Britain’s rarest habitats. Around 97% have disappeared since the 1930s. Those that remain support wildlife, store carbon, provide winter fodder and preserve generations of farming knowledge. Deliberately flooding one may help protect homes and businesses downstream, but it may also alter a valuable landscape and change the livelihood of the farmer who manages it.That leads to the ethical question at the heart of the episode.If society asks one landowner to accept repeated flooding for the benefit of hundreds or thousands of other people, who should decide?   • The New Battlefield Litter

    Modern warfare is creating a new and largely overlooked form of environmental pollution. Across battlefields, particularly in Ukraine, fibre-optic drones are leaving behind vast quantities of extremely thin cable that may remain in the landscape long after the fighting has stopped.

    Drones have transformed modern warfare, but conventional radio-controlled drones are vulnerable to electronic jamming. One solution has been the development of fibre-optic drones. These carry reels containing many kilometres of cable, which unwinds behind the aircraft as it flies. Commands travel to the drone through the fibre and video images return to the operator along the same connection.

    The technology is ingenious, but it creates an environmental problem. Once deployed, the cable remains where it falls.

    A typical fibre-optic cable used by a drone is only a fraction of a millimetre thick. At its centre is a tiny glass fibre surrounded by protective layers of plastics and synthetic polymers. The finished cable is light, strong and exceptionally difficult to see once it has fallen into grass, woodland, farmland or water.

    There is an intriguing historical parallel. The battlefields of the First World War were also covered with communication wire. Telephone and telegraph systems required enormous quantities of cable, with a single British field army potentially needing thousands of miles. Yet much of that wire had value. It could be recovered, repaired and reused.

    Modern drone fibre is different. It is scattered across the landscape, often with no practical means of locating or retrieving it.

    Nobody currently knows how much fibre-optic cable is being deposited. As an illustration of the potential scale, if 500,000 fibre-optic drones were deployed globally in a year and each carried 15 kilometres of cable, they would leave behind approximately 7.5 million kilometres of fibre. That would be enough cable to circle the Earth almost 190 times.

    The environmental significance lies not simply in the weight of material but in its extraordinary dispersal. A relatively modest mass of plastic becomes something quite different when shredded into almost invisible threads and scattered across forests, fields, rivers, wetlands and settlements.

    There are already reports from Ukraine of birds incorporating discarded fibre-optic cable into their nests. That raises uncomfortable parallels with abandoned fishing line and nets. Conservationists describe discarded fishing equipment as “ghost gear” because it can continue trapping and injuring wildlife long after it has been abandoned.

    Fibre-optic drone cable may eventually prove to be a terrestrial equivalent - ghost gear on land.

    The material has several characteristics that make this possibility concerning. It is thin, strong, difficult to see and potentially persistent. Birds and mammals may encounter it, vegetation may grow around it, and fragments may eventually enter soils and waterways. Yet the long-term ecological consequences remain poorly understood.

    Nor is this simply a Ukrainian issue. Military technologies spread rapidly. If fibre-optic drones become standard equipment in conflicts around the world, every future battlefield could potentially acquire the same environmental legacy.

    That raises questions that have received remarkably little attention. Who will remove this material once a conflict ends? Who will pay for the clean-up? How can almost invisible fibres be located across thousands of square kilometres? And what happens when recovering them is simply impractical?

    Wars leave environmental consequences long after armies have departed. Trenches soften, vegetation returns and wildlife recolonises damaged landscapes, but some remnants of conflict can persist for decades.

    A strand of fibre-optic cable hanging between two young trees may appear insignificant. Multiplied millions of times, however, it could represent an entirely new category of battlefield litter.

    The environmental impact of fibre-optic drones is still uncertain. It may ultimately prove relatively minor, or it may become a significant conservation problem. At present, there is insufficient evidence to know.

    What is clear is that enormous lengths of synthetic fibre are now being deposited across landscapes as a direct consequence of modern warfare. As history repeatedly demonstrates, what conflicts leave behind can matter almost as much as what happens while they are being fought.

    The New Battlefield Litter considers whether the technological revolution in drone warfare may be creating an environmental legacy that could remain hidden in the landscape for decades.

    Most of us head into the hills with the best of intentions. We walk, admire the view, enjoy the wildlife, and return home believing we have left little trace behind. Yet the reality is often more complicated.

    In this episode of The Bit Outside, Richard Villar explores the hidden environmental cost of countryside access through the lens of his own land in the English Lake District.   • The Fair Folk of the Wall (a story)

    This is a story, albeit a true one. Make it a bedtime tale if you desire. It is about something that happened to me one evening when I was out and about on my land.

    You see, dry stone walls seem to be everywhere in the Lake District. I walk past them without thinking. I lean on them, cross them, repair them. And yet, every now and then, one asks me to stop. On this occasion, one did.

    This particular wall is not a grand place. Just a line of stone running between woodland and open fell. But like many such walls, it sits at the edge of something.

    On one side, trees are returning. Hazel thickens. Oak rises slowly through ground once kept short by grazing. On the other side, the fell remains open, shaped by wind and weather. And between them, the wall holds its ground, as it has done for longer than anyone can remember.

    Across Cumbria, and far beyond, there are stories about such places. Old stories, passed on in low voices. Stories of paths that should not be blocked, of gaps that should not be filled too quickly, of walls that do not always behave as they should.

    It is said that certain boundaries are shared.

    This is a story about one such place.

    It began with a simple walk, late in the day, when the light was fading and the land was neither fully awake nor fully asleep. It was the kind of hour when shapes soften and distances change, when the ordinary begins to shift.

    There was no drama. No sudden movement. No raised voices.

    Just a moment.

    A figure, small and still, sat on the wall ahead of me.

    Not a sheep. Not a fox. Not something easily explained.

    And then, after a few quiet seconds, it was gone.

    As gently as mist lifting.

    It may be that this is a story of imagination. That the fading light played its part. That the mind filled in what the eye could not quite resolve. Yet I do not think so.

    My story, this story, is not about proving anything.

    It is about noticing.

    It is about what changes when a place is treated differently. When noise is removed. When work is done by hand. When land is allowed to recover, slowly and without force. Just as I am doing right now.

    Something does change.

    The air feels different. The ground feels different. The walls seem to hold more than just stone.

    Old stories of Lakeland say that the fair folk belong to margins. To edges. To places where one thing becomes another. They do not live in the middle of anything. They prefer the in-between.

    And a dry stone wall, running between woodland and fell, is exactly that.

    It is a place where, if you are patient, and not looking too hard, you might feel something shift at the very edge of your perception. It is that which happened to me.

    This story is about standing still. Listening. Letting the moment arrive on its own terms.

    If you are listening to this in bed, or in the dark, or simply in a quiet place, imagine yourself beside that wall.

    Wind moves lightly across the fell.

    The last of the daylight rests on the stones. Their daytime warmth is slowly vanishing.

    If you wait, remain patient, silent, and stay motionless, you might just see a fairy.

    Just do not go looking for one. You will maybe see one by accident, that is all, as some things prefer to be found. They do not respond to searching.

  • How to Plant a Tree That Survives

    From my land in the Lake District, I look across at a hillside scattered with fallen plastic tree tubes. Many lie flat in the grass. Most of the trees they once protected are now dead. They mark good intentions that never quite became woodland.

    This episode explores a simple but often overlooked truth: planting a tree is easy, but establishing one is not.

    We talk endlessly about planting trees. Governments count them, charities celebrate them, and photographs capture the moment a sapling goes into the ground. But what happens next is rarely discussed. And yet, it is this next phase that determines success or failure.

    Because planting is only the beginning.

    Establishment is everything.

    A young tree must survive transplant shock, extend its roots into living soil, and withstand wind, water, and weather. It must avoid being eaten by deer, rabbits, voles, and sheep. It must cope with drought in some places, and waterlogging in others. It must be protected, monitored, and revisited, again and again, during its most vulnerable early years.

    This is the real work of tree planting.

    Across the UK, millions of plastic tree tubes are used every year, amounting to thousands of tonnes of plastic. Many will never fulfil their purpose. Survival rates in large-scale planting schemes can be surprisingly low, sometimes as little as 50%, meaning that half the trees planted may never reach maturity.

    From the landscape’s point of view, the arithmetic is stark. A dead tree stores no carbon, shelters no wildlife, and holds no soil. A fallen plastic tube marks not just a lost tree, but a failed assumption - that planting alone would be enough.

    Drawing on firsthand experience from the Lakeland fells, this episode looks at what trees actually need to survive. Soil structure, drainage, root development, protection from animals, and ongoing care all play a role. Small details matter. A poorly placed planting hole, compacted soil, or neglected guard can make the difference between life and death.

    Ultimately, this is a story about attention.

  • The Ups and Downs of Open Space

    Green and open spaces are widely believed to improve health and well-being. Public health policy, media, and urban planners frequently promote parks and countryside as restorative environments. In many ways, this is true. Yet the relationship between people and green space is more complicated. Natural landscapes offer significant benefits, but they also carry physical, psychological, social, and economic costs.

    The advantages are substantial. Increasingly, green space is considered essential infrastructure rather than a luxury. In countries such as the United Kingdom, where most people live in cities, nearby green environments encourage physical activity. Studies show that people living near parks are more likely to walk regularly and experience lower rates of obesity, cardiovascular disease, and type two diabetes. Movement occurs naturally rather than as prescribed exercise.

    Green space also supports healthy ageing. Older adults with access to walkable natural environments tend to maintain better mobility, balance, and independence. Research in Japan found that elderly people living near accessible green areas had higher five-year survival rates, likely reflecting the combined effects of exercise, social interaction, and visual exposure to nature.

    Mental health benefits are well-documented. Time spent in natural environments reduces physiological stress, while lowering cortisol levels, blood pressure, and heart rate. Attention Restoration Theory suggests that natural settings help restore the brain’s capacity for directed attention by providing undemanding stimulation. Long-term studies also show that children growing up with greater exposure to green environments have lower risks of developing psychiatric disorders later in life. Greener surroundings are associated with improved attention, working memory, and behaviour in both children and adolescents.

    Green spaces also strengthen social connections. Informal encounters in shared outdoor areas help reduce loneliness and encourage everyday interaction. Thinking environmentally, natural landscapes provide protection. Urban trees reduce temperatures during heatwaves, while wetlands and woodland absorb water and reduce flood risk.

    Sadly, green space is not always seen as calming. Some people feel uneasy in large or unfamiliar landscapes. Poorly lit parks or isolated paths can create fear rather than relaxation, meaning certain groups avoid them entirely.

    Natural environments also carry health risks. Vegetation produces pollen, and allergic disease affects roughly one-third of the population. Climate change has lengthened pollen seasons and increased allergen intensity. Green spaces can also harbour zoonotic diseases. Ticks carrying Lyme disease, for example, are increasingly common in woodland habitats.

    Physical hazards are another factor. Uneven terrain, water, and exposure can lead to accidents during outdoor recreation. Those working in agriculture and forestry face particularly high risks, with fatality rates far higher than most other industries.

    Green space also has economic and social costs. Most expenditure relates not to creation but to long-term maintenance. Poorly funded parks can deteriorate quickly. Environmental improvements may also increase property values and rents, sometimes displacing local communities through so-called green gentrification.

    Finally, strong emotional attachment to landscapes can create distress when those landscapes change. This sense of loss, known as solastalgia, reflects how deeply people can care about the places around them.

    Green space, therefore, offers health, connection, and environmental protection, but it also brings risks, costs, and conflicts.

  • Ptaquiloside and the Hills Beneath Our Feet

    Standing on a Lake District hillside, bracken looks harmless. It rustles in summer, glows bronze in autumn, and has become part of what many of us think of as wild upland Britain. But bracken is not passive scenery. Hidden within its tissues is a powerful chemistry that rarely announces itself, and that can travel beyond the plant.

    In this episode of The Bit Outside, I explore ptaquiloside, a natural compound produced by bracken as part of its defence system. Ptaquiloside is a genotoxic carcinogen when ingested. It does not cause sudden illness. Its effects are slow, cumulative, and easily overlooked, which is precisely why it matters.

    The story begins not in laboratories but in fields. For more than a century, farmers noticed that cattle grazing bracken-rich land developed chronic bleeding and bladder tumours, a condition now known as bovine enzootic haematuria. The animals did not collapse. They grazed, calved, worked on, and only years later did disease appear. That lag is important. It explains why it is so easy for the rest of us to shrug and carry on.

    What makes ptaquiloside especially awkward is that it does not necessarily stay inside the plant. It is water-soluble. Rain can wash it from fronds into soil, where it may be degraded, temporarily held by soil particles, or transported onward. In the right conditions, it can leach into streams, springs, and groundwater. A grazing issue becomes a landscape issue, and what grows uphill can shape what is drunk downhill.

    The Lake District, with its high rainfall, is a perfect setting for this discussion. Monitoring has shown ptaquiloside reaching a private water well in a bracken-infested area, and UK drinking-water risk assessments have treated it as a plausible catchment contaminant rather than a curiosity. Studies have also detected small amounts of ptaquiloside in the milk of cattle grazing bracken-rich pasture. The amounts are small, but the route is direct. Milk becomes a messenger from the land that most of us never imagine when we pour it into tea or onto cereal.

    This episode also asks a wider question. Could ptaquiloside represent a quiet, natural parallel to the issues Rachel Carson raised in Silent Spring? Not because it is man-made, but because it is widespread, and easy to ignore when each discipline assumes somebody else is dealing with it. Veterinary medicine recognises bracken toxicity. Environmental chemistry has mapped how ptaquiloside behaves in soil and water. Yet it still sits awkwardly between fields, laboratories, and policy.

    For walkers, the message is not alarm but proportion. There is no strong evidence that ptaquiloside is absorbed through intact skin, and no country mandates protective equipment specifically because of it. The real issue is ingestion, especially through water. For this compound, avoidance and source choice matter more than purification. Many common wilderness treatments are designed for microbes, not dissolved plant chemistry. Clear water is not always chemically neutral simply because it looks clean, tastes cold, and runs over bright stones.

    Bracken will still rustle in summer. It will still glow bronze on the fells. But once we understand what can move with the rain beneath those fronds, it becomes harder to see it as simple scenery. If you have ever filled a bottle from a stream without thinking, or walked through bracken as if it were only background, this one is for you. Expect field stories, a little chemistry, and a calm set of takeaways for hill days.

    We also separate myth from mechanism. Ptaquiloside is not a contact hazard for most of us. The evidence points to ingestion, not skin. So the practical questions are ordinary ones. Where did this water come from? What sits uphill? Is there a safer source? When in doubt, carry water.
