  • Wise Men Again? Sermon for February 1, 2026
    2026/02/03

Welcome back to the Basin and Towel podcast! I’m your host, Pastor Chris Cahill. I live in Lodi, Ohio, where last year I retired from 45 years of pastoral ministry in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. In my retirement I’ve been doing some substitute preaching in other churches - this episode is the sermon I preached on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at Faith Lutheran Church in Avon, Ohio.

Can you believe it’s been less than six weeks since Christmas? Wow! Everyone moved on so quickly! The very next day after Christmas, stores restocked their shelves for Valentine’s Day, TV programming focused on New Year’s Eve and football playoffs, all kinds of people went back to work and school and whatever else they were doing before Christmas, and it’s like nothing has changed. On top of that, January has been a long month of chaos, fear, and anger in the news, snow on the ground, and subzero wind in the air. And today is the eve of the day when we’re eager to pin all our hopes and dreams of better days to come on the prophetic abilities of . . . a groundhog!Did the birth of Jesus really have so little effect on us and our world? Or do we collectively have the attention span of goldfish? Or - and this may be the saddest thing - was His birth never that important to begin with?

This week’s readings from God’s word were Micah 6:1–8, 1 Corinthians 1:18–31, and Matthew 5:1–12

  • A Sermon for the Baptism of Jesus, January 11, 2026
    2026/01/30

Welcome back to the Basin and Towel podcast! I’m your host, Pastor Chris Cahill. I live in Lodi, Ohio, where last year I retired from 45 years of pastoral ministry in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. In my retirement I’ve been doing some substitute preaching in other churches - this episode is the sermon I preached on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Malvern, Ohio.

The church calendar designates January 6 as the day to remember that after Jesus was born, the Wise Men came to worship him and give Him precious gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh - because they learned and believed that the Babe of Bethlehem was in fact the true King of Israel.

The church calendar also says that the very next Sunday (January 11 this year) is the day for us to remember that when Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River as a grownup, the Holy Spirit came in the form of a dove and landed on Him, while God the Father’s voice proclaimed from heaven “This is my Beloved Son!” This was the beginning of Jesus’ earthly ministry - but also, the anchor point of our salvation.

This week’s readings from God’s word were Isaiah 42:1-9, Romans 6:1-11, and Matthew 3:13-17

  • "Arise and Shine!" sermon for Epiphany 2026 (January 4)
    2026/01/08

Welcome back to the Basin and Towel podcast! I’m your host, Pastor Chris Cahill. I live in Lodi, Ohio, where last year I retired from 45 years of pastoral ministry in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. In my retirement I’ve been doing some substitute preaching in other churches - this episode is the sermon I preached on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at The Ministry Center of Hosanna and Faithwalk Lutheran Churches in Columbia Station, Ohio, and at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Pleasant City, Ohio.

The Christmas season begins on Christmas Day (December 25) and goes for twelve days (just like in the song). The Christmas season ends on January 5, and the church calendar designates the very next day (January 6) as the day to remember that after Jesus was born, the Wise Men came to worship him and give Him precious gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Even though Sunday January 4 was still in the Christmas season, I took this opportunity to talk about your favorite kind of cake and what St Matthew’s Gospel tells us about the visit of the Wise Men, and I suggested a new and exciting way for you to greet each other when you come to church this year!

This week’s readings from God’s word were Isaiah 60:1-7 and Matthew 2:1-12
