What if your creative career didn’t have to fit into just one box?
In this episode of Artists Unveiled, Holiday sits down with the endlessly fascinating Sara Sugihara, whose career has taken her from classical piano to dance, choreography, teaching, composing, translation, and everything in between.
Sara has spent decades moving through the arts on her own terms, from dancing and choreographing internationally to working with companies like Ballet Rambert, Australian Dance Theatre, and West Australian Ballet. But what makes her story especially interesting is the way she sees all of these disciplines as connected. For Sara, music, movement, language, teaching, and creativity are all part of the same conversation.
She talks about being told she wasn't talented enough to dance, finding her way to New York anyway, learning languages because she simply had to, and discovering that the skills she built in one art form could completely transform the way she approached another.
We also get into the less glamorous side of a creative career: making a living, touring, teaching, staying productive, reinventing yourself when your body tells you it's time to change direction, and figuring out what comes next when the path you started on no longer looks the same.
And then there is Sara's approach to teaching, which might be one of our favorite parts of the conversation. If you can't explain it, how can you expect someone else to understand it? Her answer to that question has shaped the way she teaches dance, thinks about music, and works with other artists.
This is a conversation about staying curious, refusing to narrow yourself, and building a creative life that can keep evolving with you.
