概要

 Route 17, late October, a motel with flickering vacancy signs and a room that costs forty-two dollars a night. Luna checks in after her car dies near the Tennessee line, and the clerk hands her a key to Room 8 without meeting her eyes. She sleeps badly—wakes to find the armoire door open when she knows she closed it, a faint smell of cedar and something else, something metallic. The next morning the clerk asks how she slept and she lies. She leaves before dawn, but on her way out she sees the maid wheeling a cart past Room 8, and the maid is crying. A story about the places we stay just once, the doors we don't open, and the sound of a latch clicking shut in the dark.
