  • Talking Hoosier Baseball – 2025 – Week 11 – Iowa
    2025/04/29
Zach, Chris, Carl, and Cass discuss a tough series sweep in Iowa City By Carl James @jovian34 April 29th, 2025 Indiana went 1-3 on the week, suffering a series sweep to the B1G leaders in Iowa over the weekend, which shut the door on the Hoosiers chances for a third straight at-large bid to the NCAA Tourney. The week started on a very bright note with a run rule win over a good Ball State team at Victory Field in Indianapolis Wednesday night. The Hoosiers got eight straight batters on base on the way to a 9-run fifth inning. Friday night in Iowa City saw the Hoosiers continue solid play. The pitching was exceptional with Pete Haas and Ryan Kraft combining for 5 scoreless innings to start the series. Gavin Seebold gave up an early solo shot but settled in to keep the Hoosiers tied with Iowa at one-run a piece forcing extra innings. IU’s batters reached base 14 times in the game, but couldn’t get the big hit. Iowa walked it off in the 10th with a 2-strike squeeze play. The rest of the weekend was tough to watch. Hoosier hitting was ineffective at even running up pitch counts and getting on base. Cole Gilley and Ben Grable were hit hard both days. That combination eventually lead to Iowa winning both games by run-rules. Indiana dropped to 9th place and 12-12 in the B1G conference. With 12 teams invited to the tournament, Indiana is still in a pretty good spot to qualify for the only chance they will have to make the NCAA’s: winning the conference’s automatic bid. In former coaching news today, Mississippi State relieved head coach Chris Lemonis of his duties. Lemonis was head coach of the Hoosiers from 2014-to-2018 leading Indiana to 3 regionals in four year. Lemonis won the 2021 National Championship with the Bulldogs, setting a high bar that they have struggled to return to. They also promoted former IU pitching coach Justin Parker to interim head coach for the remainder of the season. YouTube: Audio:

  • Talking Hoosier Baseball – 2025 – Week 10 – Maryand
    2025/04/23
Zach, Chris, Carl, and Cass discuss a week of ups and downs By Carl James @jovian34 April 22nd, 2025 Indiana had an eventful week. Tuesday saw the Hoosiers drop another close game, this time in the final home midweek game against Indiana State. The bats didn’t do enough to overcome several balls finding holes in a big middle inning. The Hoosiers were down 6 to 1 going into the bottom of the 8th on Friday in the series opener with Maryland and showed that they are more than capable of staging a comeback and grinding out a win in a close game. Will Moore got on in the 8th after Cooper Malamazian cut the lead to 1 run with a two-run bomb. Moore scored on a two-out infield single by Korbyn Dickerson. Tyler Cerny, representing the winning run, got to third base on an errant pickoff throw with no outs. The sacrifice opportunity was squandered by two strikeouts. That brought back up Moore, who got into a two-strike count of his own but went the other way for a line drive single to walk it off. For his weekend efforts Moore was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. In steady rain on Saturday Cole Gilley and Grant Holderfield were ineffective in a pair of disastrous early innings that lead to Maryland evening up the series on Saturday. Despite seemingly being outplayed, Maryland managed to tie the Easter Sunday rubber match at three runs in the bottom of the sixth before an onslaught lead by an historic 3-hit, 3-walk, reached base in all appearances day by Devin Taylor, who called game in the bottom of the 8th inning with a 3-run bomb to clinch the run-rule and give Indiana the series win. Korbyn Dickerson | Ben Grable | Jeff Mercer By Carl James @jovian34 April 20th, 2025 Indiana claimed its first rubber match of the season in convincing style with 15-5 run rule victory over Maryland on Easter Sunday to take the series. Four Hoosier hitters belted home runs. Jake Hanley had two of those, along with shots by Korbyn Dickerson, Tyler Cerny, and Devin Taylor called game in the 8th inning by ripping a 3-run shot to put the Hoosiers up by 10 and clinch the run rule. Taylor reached base all six plate appearances, 3 by walk, 3 by hit, a feat no Hoosier has matched in at least the past two decades. Korbyn Dickerson and Ben Grable For his part, Dickerson went 3-for-5 on the day with 4 RBI's. Ben Grable opened the game on the mound with 4 innings of 1-run baseball. Dickerson, Grable, and head coach Jeff Mercer met with the media following the contest. Zach, Chris, Carl, and Cass discuss a series loss at Illinois By Carl James @jovian34 April 14th, 2025 Indiana went on the road this weekend and picked up their fourth series loss out of six in conference play. Only by the fact that their series wins have both been sweeps are the Hoosiers still on the right side of .500 baseball in conference play. As it broke down, it was the Friday night game that was the decider. Saturday was a convincing win for the Hoosiers and Sunday was even more convincing for Illinois. It was Friday where Hoosier pitching was good enough, but the bats were in between on timing. YouTube: Audio:
