Luke has always been the one who sees too much, and as a child, only Theo believes him about the ghosts, especially Abigail, his so-called imaginary friend. After claiming a bowler hat from the attic, Luke attracts the attention of something tall, silent, and very invested in getting its property back. In the present, Luke is 90 days sober and still psychically linked to Nell, feeling every ache and fear she does. When attempting to save someone else from a relapse leaves him cold, broke, and being quietly stalked by the same hat-wearing figure, Luke realizes the pain he’s been carrying isn’t his alone.
