• From Turkey to the US: Helping Founders Who Make the Leap | Didem Altop, Treeo VC (TRVC 34)
    2026/08/27

What does it take for a founder from Turkey — or elsewhere in the world — to make the leap into the US startup ecosystem? In this episode of TRVC, I speak with Didem Altop, General Partner at Treeo VC, an early-stage US venture capital fund investing primarily in AI-native B2B companies and selected deep-tech opportunities with global founders who are building in the United States. A significant part of its portfolio have Turkish co-founders.Didem brings a particularly interesting perspective to this question. Long before becoming a VC, she worked at the intersection of entrepreneurship and economic development and played an important role in the early development of Endeavor Turkey. We look back at how Turkey's startup ecosystem has evolved since those early days — and at the compounding effect created when successful entrepreneurs become investors, mentors and founders of the next generation of companies. We also discuss why the United States remains such an important market for ambitious global founders. For Didem, entering the US isn't simply about accessing American customers: it means plugging into a global marketplace for capital, talent, customers, mentors and other founders. That leads us into Treeo VC itself: how Didem and her partners came together, why they decided to become first-time fund managers, the role of VC Lab in that journey, and where a sub-$10 million micro-VC fits into the much larger US venture ecosystem.AI is naturally a major part of the conversation. Rather than treating AI as a single investment category, Didem describes the different layers of the emerging AI economy and shares examples from Treeo's portfolio. Finally, we turn back to Turkey. Didem describes the Turkish startup ecosystem as having reached its “adolescence”: the country has developed considerable strength at the earliest stages, but companies can still struggle as they reach seed and Series A. We discuss what is missing, what needs to develop next, and how stronger connections with the US ecosystem can help Turkish founders scale. And we close on a more personal note: the importance of mentorship in Didem's own journey and why she sees being a resource to founders and the wider ecosystem as an important part of Treeo's mission — whether or not an investment ultimately takes place.Chapters00:00 — Introduction: Didem Altop and Treeo VC02:00 — What is Treeo VC?04:21 — Endeavor and the early days of Turkey’s startup ecosystem10:15 — How startup ecosystems create a compounding effect16:18 — From ecosystem builder to first-time VC fund manager22:22 — Why the United States? • The Missing Piece in Deep Tech: Venture Financing - Serhat Çiçekoğlu (Sente Ventures) TRVC 31
    2026/07/15

Deep tech startups don't usually fail because the technology doesn't work—they fail because they can't finance their first factory.

In this episode of TRVC – The Turkish VC Podcast, I speak with Serhat Çiçekoğlu, Managing Partner at Sente Ventures, about one of the least-discussed challenges in venture capital: how deep tech companies bridge the gap between a successful pilot and full-scale commercialization.

Unlike traditional venture funds, Sente Ventures provides non-dilutive project financing—typically $200 million to $1.5 billion—to help deep tech startups build their first commercial manufacturing facility.

We also discuss why this financing gap exists, how project finance differs from venture capital, the future of deep tech investing, and Serhat's candid assessment of the Turkish startup ecosystem, including where he believes Turkey excels—and where it still has significant work to do.

Whether you're a founder, investor, policymaker, or simply interested in the future of venture capital, this episode offers a fascinating look at a part of the startup financing landscape that few people ever see.

  • Daha Fazla Kadın, Daha Güçlü Bir Girişim Ekosistemi - Nihal Güngör (SistersLab) TRVC 30
    2026/07/01

Konuşmada adı geçen bazı kurum ve organizasyonlar:• SistersLab• TurkNet• Birleşmiş Milletler Kadının Statüsü Komisyonu (CSW)• UN Women• Sabancı Vakfı• Sivil Toplum için Destek Vakfı• Hepsiburada• L'Oréal Türkiye• Arya Women Investment Platform• Founder One• Endeavor Türkiye• İbrahim Bodur Sosyal Girişimcilik Ödülleri• İlk Fırsat Programı• How I Built This PodcastTRVC – The Turkish VC Podcast, Türkiye girişimcilik ve yatırım ekosisteminin kurucularını, yatırımcılarını ve ekosistem liderlerini ağırlamaya devam ediyor.Kanalımıza abone olmayı, videoyu beğenmeyi ve görüşlerinizi yorumlarda paylaşmayı unutmayın.

  • Why Most VCs Are Bad at Exits | Alex Konoplyasty (Flashpoint Capital) TRVC 29
    2026/06/18

Alex is the Founder and General Partner of Flashpoint Capital, a growth-stage VC and venture debt firm managing over $600 million. Before founding Flashpoint, he spent years in investment banking at Morgan Stanley, advising on major telecom, media, and technology transactions across Europe and emerging markets.Over the past decade, Flashpoint has invested in dozens of technology companies, backed multiple unicorns, and completed nearly 30 exits. In our conversation, Alex shares why he believes most investors know how to deploy capital but very few truly understand how to exit investments successfully.Topics we discuss include:• Why exits are the most overlooked skill in venture capital• How Flashpoint has built an exit-focused investment strategy• Why many founders should stop obsessing over unicorns and focus on building valuable businesses• The realities of scaling B2B startups from emerging markets• Why the US remains the world's most attractive market for software companies• Common mistakes founders make when expanding internationally• Building go-to-market teams and selling into the US from abroad• Venture debt: when it makes sense and when it doesn't• Why Europe struggles to produce venture-scale outcomes compared to the US• Lessons from investing in founders across Eastern Europe, Israel, and the United States• How founders should think about acquisitions, secondary sales, and liquidityOne of Alex's most memorable observations:"People know how to spray and pray money. People have no idea how to exit."Whether you're a founder, angel investor, VC, or simply interested in how successful technology companies are built and sold, this episode offers a candid look at what happens after the fundraising headlines.Guest:Alex KonoplyastyFounder & General Partner, Flashpoint CapitalAbout TRVCTRVC (The Turkish VC Podcast) explores venture capital, startups, entrepreneurship, technology, and innovation through conversations with leading investors, founders, and ecosystem builders from Turkey and around the world.Subscribe for more conversations with the people shaping the future of technology and venture capital.#VC #VentureCapital #Startups #Entrepreneurship #FlashpointVC #AlexKonoplyasty #TRVC #SaaS #B2B #VentureDebt #PrivateEquity #Technology #Investing

  • Hem Etki Hem Getiri Sağlamak - Yalın Karadoğan (Leapfrog Investments) TRVC 28
    2026/06/04

    2026/05/20

In this episode of TRVC, I sit down with ‪Serkan Ünsal‬, founder of ‪Startups.watch‬ — the platform often described as the “Crunchbase of Turkey.”We explore the evolution of the Turkish startup and venture capital ecosystem through the eyes of someone who has been there since the very beginning. Before founding Startups.watch, Serkan worked at Ericsson Turkey and Turkcell, where he was involved in one of the earliest attempts to establish a corporate venture capital arm in Turkey back in 2008. After leaving corporate life, he founded Dakick, an event recommendation startup later acquired by Turkcell. A visit to Silicon Valley during those years inspired him to build a data platform tracking the Turkish startup ecosystem — which became Startups.watch.Today, Startups.watch powers reports and ecosystem insights used across the Turkish venture ecosystem and contributes Turkish startup data to international platforms and ecosystem reports. In this conversation, we discuss:- How the Turkish startup ecosystem evolved over the last 15 years- Why Turkey has a seed funding boom but still suffers from a Series A crunch- The success of Turkish gaming startups and the rise of AI app studios- Why Turkish startups struggle to globalize early enough- The differences between Istanbul, Silicon Valley, New York, and Boston- Why Turkish corporates still struggle with acquisitions- How startup ecosystem data is collected and why most global databases are “dirty”- Why Serkan believes mindset matters more than location- The future of Turkish venture capital, fintech, gaming, and AIThis was a wide-ranging conversation about venture capital, startup culture, product management, founder psychology, ecosystem building, and the structural realities of building technology companies in Turkey. If you follow Turkish startups, venture capital, technology, or emerging ecosystems, this episode is packed with insights.CHAPTERS00:00 Introduction & Serkan Ünsal’s Background 02:20 From Turkcell to Founding Startups.watch 05:20 Product Management, Silicon Valley & Early Turkish VC 09:40 Building the “Crunchbase of Turkey” 14:20 Turkey’s Startup Ecosystem: Seed Boom vs Series A Crunch 21:10 Gaming, AI & Turkey’s Global Startup Successes 28:28 Why Mindset Matters More Than Location 33:45 Istanbul vs Silicon Valley vs Boston 37:10 Exits, IPOs & Why Turkish Corporates Avoid Acquisitions 45:40 What Foreign Investors Really Think About Turkey 49:00 Books, Learning Sources & People Who Helped Along the WayReferenced in the episode:Startups.watchCrunchbasePitchBookCB InsightsDealroomMattermarkDataFoxRevo Capital212 (see the TRVC episode with Ali Karabey)e2vc (see the TRVC episode with Enis Hulli)Dream GamesPeak GamesTaleMonster GamesFimpleApostoGlobalTurkIf you enjoyed the episode, please consider:Subscribing to the channelSharing the episode with someone interested in startups or venture capitalLeaving a comment with your thoughts on the Turkish startup ecosystemTRVC explores the people, ideas, and capital shaping the Turkish venture ecosystem.
